How is the Copy blending mode practically different from Normal?

I notice that Filter layers will use the Copy blending mode by default, but when I switch it to Normal, there doesn’t seem to be a visible change?

The most information I could find on Copy is Misc — Krita Manual 5.0.0 documentation , and it says that it’s useful when using Filter layers and masks, but why is that exactly when Normal seems to achieve the same effect?

Also, does anyone else notice strange canvas compositing with the following steps? Is this a bug to report?

  1. Draw on layer 1 on top of background layer
  2. Set layer 1 to Copy
  3. Move layer 1 around
  4. Set layer 1 back to Normal
  5. Leftover transparency visble on canvas, can wipe it away by drawing on it or moving the layer again, see image

Copy-vs-Normal is mostly noticeable when having semi-transparent areas. The deform brush in particular behaves completely differently on semi-transparent areas in copy and normal mode.

I see the compositing glitches/artifacts in the situation you describe.
Even without the Move operation, there are artifacts which are variable depending on which layers you turn on and off and in which order.
For Step 5, you can toggle the Background layer to remove the artifacts.

I suggest that you raise a bug report and post a link to it here.

Hmm thanks, I assume by “the deform brush” you mean the deform brush engine since I don’t see a specific deform brush preset.

I’ve reported it here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425318
