Like the title says, I have a bit of a problem with finding the right colors for backgrounds. I tried looking for tutorials on internet, but nothing really helps…
It’s like a never ending story, whenever I draw something, it takes minutes to sketch, but then when I’m starting to search for colors, i’m blocked, running in circles for hours again and again! Most of the time, I end up frustrated and the drawing forgotten in a folder.
Maybe some of you may have some tips and tricks to share with me (and others who may be in the same situation)?
What’s your specific issue with finding colors? When you have a scene with objects you’d normally give them their natural or usual colors, so I guess that’s not really your main problem right? Is it more about a color theme? The question is a bit to general to answer objectively.
Oh, sorry! For example: I am currently drawing a mountain landscape, with a lake in the foreground. The picture I’m drawing from is kinda greyish. I’d prefer to draw a more sunny setting, but I just can’t get it right!
For landscapes, I always tried to create something believable, and if I had no idea what to choose, I used picture hosting websites to find something as an idea, not to copy it, but as a stimulus. May this be a way for you?
A small selection of sites with copyright free stock photos you perhaps want to search through (some are only for personal & non-commercial use, but for an idea it should be no issue):
I like to quickly sketch in whatever colour I feel like, then I play with the hue filter to see if anything else would look better. Ctrl+u is the default shortcut for that filter.
Hello, search for images reference. Before Internet and books, artists travelled to see and copy paintings. You have to study how other artists work to create a mental library where you can pick. There is no “easy and quick” solution. It’s about art and art is quite difficult.
Yeah… that’s probably what I lack. A mental library for backgrounds. I’m currently doing a self challenge with backgrounds, so maybe I had some puzzle pieces on what the problem was. @Michelist, @sooz and you gave me some more, so thank you very much
