How to Clip a Layer: Basic & Advanced Techniques

Hello. I wrote a tutorial for how to clip a layer in Krita covering the basics, the theory, some practical techniques involving clipping masks, and some advanced techniques Krita allows you to use. Read it on my website:

I’ve also made the project files available for download on Gumroad:

Update: I made a video covering the techniques I had written about.

thank you! i wasn’t aware of the eraser mode, but it seems to get around my frustrations with how layer masks work in krita.

What is your frustration at how layers work at Krita? Maybe there are other ways too.

And the Erase blending mode is the same thing that makes erasers work., btw

my frustration has to do with habit i suppose. i’m used to transparency masks working like this: mask opacity is tied to the opacity of your stroke, meaning you don’t have to worry about what color you have selected when you paint into the mask. to erase out of the mask you either use the eraser or switch to the “erase” brush mode.

as far as i know, in krita it’s tied to value, meaning you have to paint with white to get a fully opaque stroke for instance. then, when you’re done working with the mask, you have to go back and re-select the color you were working with. not a huge deal, but it gets to be frustrating after a while.

i’ve only tested the eraser layer blend mode a little while, but it seems like it works pretty much exactly as what i’m used to with transparency masks – even better as it can affect several layers in the stack without the use of folders.
