How to crop image or layer VS whole canvas?

Does anybody know how to crop an image (jpg etc) after import, rather than the whole canvas?

Using the crop tool crops the whole canvas when all I want to do is crop my reference file or single layer on the canvas so it can occupy one side, while I draw on the other. Sometimes the image is just too big.

Thanks

Maybe there are better ways, but you could use Layer → New → Cut selection to new layer.

Then you will have to delete the original layer.

The suggestion by @Bleke looks like the quickest way, followed by a Move of content on the new layer to move it to one side of the canvas.
I think if you use Copy Selection to New Layer instead of the Cut, you could make the original layer invisible so that you can go back to it to get and use a different selection if the first one you did starts to seem like it needs more/less/different original content on it.

Nice one, will try

Good additional point there, thanks! :+1:

In the tool options docker, you can limit it to layer.

Yes! Exactly what I was after! Thanks :pray:t2::smiley:
