How to export a single layer as png without a backround (transparent)

Ive deleted all other layers so that I can see the checkerboard, i have alphas checked when I save to png, Ive tried dozens of things for weeks and keep getting the same problem when I import as plane to blender; theres a background in the plane I dont want there.

Strangely, no number of videos or comments specifically touch on this so I must really be missing something obvious.

  • Your image needs to have transparent pixels
  • You need to check "Store alpha channel (transparency)
  • then the image will have a transparent background; if other applications don’t open it with a transparent background, it’s a bug in those applications.
