How to Fade One Image Onto Another in krita

Hello,

I would like to fade one layer into another, as in this picture.

But I have only basic knowledge of Krita. What is the procedure? I tried with the gradient transparency but it cuts the image too roughly…

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum

It sounds like you need a better gradient.
The question is - how did you do it? What do the gradients look like?

Can you upload a full screen screenshot that shows the Layers docker for this and also upload the transparency mask gradient images.

The ‘slope range’ of the gradient depends on how far you draw it with the Gradient tool.
For this application, you need to use a black-to-white gradient.
You also have a choice of fade-in of one image over the other or fade-out of one image over the other or a cross-fade between them that gives some show through of a background layer.

Hello, I just draw a line with the gradient tool, but there is not much control. for instance:

specifically, the transition is too sharp (see the red to black gradient). How do I control it?
Thanks

You’ve been doing ‘destructive’ operations on images, meaning there is no going back from what you’ve done.

What you need to do is have the two original images on separate layers and put a transparency mask on each of them.
Then you can make many different fades by manipulating the content of the transparency masks until you’re satisfied with the result.

Here is a simple ‘top fade-in over bottom’ effect with a blue rose on top and a pink rose on the bottom.

If you put a fade out gradient on the pink rose, you can adjust it to have some background showing at the transition to give a ‘separation’ effect.

The main point is that the original blue rose and pink rose images have not been altered and you can manipulate the transparency masks as much as you like until you get the result that you want.

You can also paint hand drawn gradients on the transparency masks for a fade over a non-straight line.

Thanks, that’s makes more sense!
