How to make the background of an image white?

Hi all.

When I open an image file ie. jpg for tracing, the image has the black and white checkerboard background (to indicate that it has no background). How do I put the image on a white background in order for me to trace it? The black and white squares make it hard to see parts of the image and are distracting.

Also, when I create a new layer over the image to trace, when I turn off the original image visibility, the tracing layer also has the black and white background. I want to see the tracing on a white background.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, this menu option:
Image —> Image Background Color and Transparency…

or create a Fill layer and place at the bottom

or create a new paint layer and fill (shift+backspace to use selected foreground color or ctrl/cmd+backspace for selected background color).

Thanks for your reply.

I think that my mistake was that I was just opening up Krita and then immediately opened an image file. What I did instead that worked was I created a new file, which created a white background layer, and I then imported the image file on top, and then I created a new layer for the tracing. So when I turn off the image layer, the tracing layer will have a white background of the bottom layer (from creating a new file).
