How to recolor only specific areas of single-layer image

  1. Alright so, I want to change the color of a picture that I inserted in a specific background. But the issue is, I want to change the color of the picture without changing any shadows, details, lines, etc. And keep in mind that this isn’t a picture I’ve drawn, so I don’t have multiple layers. I have only one layer, and that is the one with the picture. Basically, what I’m saying is, the color of the picture isn’t fitting with the background color, so I want to change it. For an example, the picture I inserted is a picture of white headphones, and the background is a black PC setup. So I naturally want to change the color of the headphones to black, without changing anything else like shading, lines, texture. I did try to use saturation tool but it’s not really working because I can’t match the colors. I would really appreciate some advice. I tried to look up a tutorial for it, but nothing is showing up. In advance, to whoever answers my question, thank you soo much for your assistance! You really helped me out.

Someone replied saying that I should upload a screenshot showing the image on the canvas, so that I can get better advice. I’m unable to upload exactly what I want to work on because it contains my friend’s face, but I decided to quickly make an example. So, (dont mind how badly cut this image is, it’s only an example) how could I make this little man fit with the background, without changing anything except the colors on him.

There are many ways to go about it but I would start with making a selection around the object you’re trying to change. Then you can either use:

  1. A filter like HSV or Color Balance from the main menu on top, or
  2. Make a new layer, fill it with desired color and change the layer mode to either color, multiply or overlay, whichever works best in your situation. If the color is too strong you can lower the opacity of the layer.

Welcome to the forum, @ame1. I condensed the title of your post so that users quickly scanning new topics will see what the issue is.

@ame1 It would be very helpful to assist in understanding your situation if you uploaded a full screen screenshot of krita showing the image on the canvas.
Depending on the exact nature of the image, someone could then suggest a ‘best method’ or more than one ‘good method’.

It’s understandable that you wouldn’t want to upload an image that contained your friend’s face or even hair/clothes.
If you had an image painting/editing application, you could paint over their face/hair/clothes with a suitable matching colour to make your friend unrecognisable but still give a very good idea of what the headphones situation is

Based on my guess from your initial written description, I’d select the white headphones using the Contiguous Colour Selection tool with a low Threshold and Action set to Add so that I could pick up the different parts of the headphones until I had all of the headphones.
Bad partial selections can be undone (Ctrl+Z) and the Threshold reduced to fine tune the selected and added regions.

Having selected them, you could then try the suggestions by @Welume from earlier.

Yup, thanks to you and Welume the colors actually look very similar! I’ll experiment a bit more with the coloring options, and I’ll leave this thread open for a week just in case if anyone has another piece of advice to share. But once again, thank you so much for helping me out and being so nice! I really appreciate it.

Yup, thank you so much Welume! The second option actually works quite well! I really appreciate your advice, it came in pretty handy.

I’m glad I could help
