my Krita hung, and the work was eventually saved as a file (.kri) how can I restore it now? As soon as I click on this file, the Krita program itself and the previous copy of the picture are opened to me. Help me please
the program crashed and the file was saved as (.kri) but the previous copy was just (.png) I don’t know how to restore my drawing. I read on one site that you need to start recovery, but here’s how to do it?
Were you working on an image that you’d worked on previously and so already had it in a .kra file, or had you made a new image inside krita and done work on it before the crash?
Where did the .png file come from? Did you Export it from inside krita before the crash?
If krita crashed then your work for that session would not have been saved as a .kra file. While you were working on it, before it crashed, did you do a Save operation at any time. If you did then that has an image at the time you did the Save and any further work will not be in the .kra file.
If your image file is called ‘MyImage.kra’ then it will contain the image as it was before you started work on it or at the last time you did a Save.
If you have autosave active (which it is by default) then after a crash and a restart you should be offered a chance to open the autosaved file. Did you see a window that said there was a recoverable autosave file?
everything is exactly as you described. But I didn’t see any window.
the file is generally called somehow strange. just a set of letters
I took the liberty to change the title of the topic to reflect what the question. Please describe the question correctly in the title in future posts.
Thank you
You need to explain what you did. You could start by answering the first two questions.
What is the name of the file that is ‘somehow strange’?
At this stage, it seems likely that you have lost your work and will have to proceed with the contents of the .png file. Where did the .png file come from?
Is there a file called MyImage.kra-autosave.kra?
Hi, i have the same problem, i lost my work during saving close. And now, when i open the document.kra is the old version.
Can I get my job back?Is there any version control?
Thanks
Is there a file called document.kra-autosave.kra in the same folder as document.kra?
(If so, you should be advised of that when you try to open document.kra.)
How long were you working on document.kra?
The Autosave interval is set in Settings -> Configure Krita -> General -> File handling tab.
Why did you lose your work? Was there a crash? Did you do a Save and it crashed? Did you do a Save and it seemed to work? Are you sure you saved it to the same folder location? Did you do Save or Save As?
There are various kinds of version control possible. You can set up a simple multi-level backup system in Settings -> Configure Krita -> General -> File Handling tab.
You can do manually versioned saves using File -> Save Incremental Version or File -> Save Incremental Backup.
All this is explained in the manual: https://docs.krita.org/en/
Ok, i worked about 3-4h, image|400x335 i see this document.kra.
The image document is modified when I saved. But I don’t know how to get it back
I gave to save, and while saving I closed the program. I got a message like “Waiting for me to finish saving”. This morning when I went to open it it had not been stored correctly
If you work in krita (or any application) for 3-4 hours without doing any saves then you are very … optimistic.
I’d suggest doing regular Incremental Saves or multi-level backups with Saves if you want a full historical version control. Or at least do regular ordinary Saves so you don’t lose 3-4 hours of work in case of accidents.
Reto_cartelisimo.kra~ is a backup file which has your image before you started work on it in the last session. i.e. before the last Save.
Reto_cartelisimo is recognised as a krita file by Windows but the file extension is not displayed. Is this because of your settings in File Explorer?
I expect that the .kra~ version has your ‘old’ image?
What is in Reto_cartelisimo?
Unfortunately it did not contain the old version, I have configured the autosave according to the manual that you have given me and I have resumed the work.
Thank you very much anyway for answering me
Autosave is only for recovery after a crash. When a Save is done, the autosave file is deleted because it’s not needed anymore.
@Andres_Chavarrias What version of Krita are you using? If you’re using 4.2.0-4.2.7, then you might’ve fall victim to a bit of … misunderstanding between Krita (or more precisely, a library that Krita uses) and Windows, when Krita thought that telling Windows to do the work is enough to get the work done; which was a bit too optimistic. It works on any other system
In any case, 4.2.8 and 4.2.9 should be safer in that regards.
I also suggest using Save Incremental Version - you can just not use Save, but Save Incremental Version every half an hour or something, and rely on autosave for cases when Krita or system crashes. That’s what I do and I never lost anything, because I always have multiple older versions to go to in any case.
Problem description: While working in Krita, the program simply crashed. They wrote “the program is not responding. Close?”. Well, I had to close, because it could all hang for a long time. After closing the program, I rebooted the laptop and went to the folder where my work is stored. Two files have already appeared (I just noticed that now) - (. Kra) and (.png)
PNG - image name.png-autosave
kra - .KmMDs
Also, as I just saw, a folder also appeared - CrashDumb
This is the situation. Sorry that I didn’t explain the whole point of the problem to you from the beginning, since I temporarily did not have access to the laptop.
The file named ‘image name.png-autosave’ probaby has a .kra extension so that its full name is ‘image name.png-autosave.kra’.
It seems that you either opened ‘image name.png’ in krita to work on it or you created a new image and saved it as ‘image name.png’ at some point before the crash. I’m making guesses here because you haven’t given an explanation of what you actually did.
That autosave file can be opened in krita (I suggest that you rename it as ‘image name-saved.kra’ and look in there. It should have the state of your work from a few minutes before the crash (depending on the autosave interval that is set in Settings -> Configure Krita -> General -> File Handling tab.
The folder is probably called ‘CrashDump’.
The .KmMDs.kra file sounds like a Windows specific thing and I know little about Windows systems.
@tiar i use 4.2.2 version,
I’ll update to the current version.
Thanks
