I figured out how to duplicate cropped selection to a new layer, trim to selection, invert selection, export said selection, export said layer… however I cannot find a button to help me save the cropped selection only. Images for reference
You have to export to a file format that actually support’s transparency (like PNG) and leave alpha intact.
Hi Takiro, thanks for your prompt reply. I looked at your linked post, and I tried saving as PNG with the same settings and it still saves the rest of the canvas (mostly white) instead of only my freeform-cropped image
At this stage, or any stage, it’s always useful to provide a full screen screenshot with the Layers docker and the status bar fully visible.
Hello, I suppose you understand that an image in computer world must be a rectangle ? There is no thing as a “free crop” image in digital world. If your background is transparent, the transparency will be saved in PNG file relative to the settings. But the transparency may be shown black or white depending of the software you use to view it. Post the png image somewhere so we can check if transparency is good.
In addition to what’s already mentioned. Krita files usually also have a fully opaque white background layer by default. Delete it from the layer’s stack (Krita should show a checkered background to indicate transparency). Depending on the tool you use to show the image outside of Krita it shows the background as whatever the background color of that tool is. Uploading or sending the files can result in that application/website converting the image to JPG again and remove the transparency.
Thank you everyone for explaining the concept! I realised that the white background is indeed transparent. And I’ll keep in mind that an image must always be a rectangle. Cheers
