How to upload a design to paint?

Hello, new to this and cannot see clearly any prompt area or option to upload a design, or in my case, photograph to paint/manipulate, can anyone help?
I was advised before joining that this is like a free version of Photoshop - please correct me if I am wrong?
Thank you!

This website is for actual artists. There is no prompt area.

It is not.

 Hello @SJP24, and welcome to the forum!

Krita is an Open Source Software and as such everyone can have it free of charge, even if there are Open Source Programs that are sold, but if you would take their sourcecode and compile it yourself, you would get the sold Open Source Software for free too.

For the comparison of Krita and Photoshop, Krita is not a PS clone, but Krita has of course the most options PS offers too, since both are raster-graphics programs.
If you want to import a picture into Krita to manipulate your picture you just have to open it via the shortcut CTRL + O or the menu command “File” → “Open”, or you simply drag it with your mouse over Krita’s canvas and drop it there which will open a little dialig asking you as what you want to import the just dropped picture.

As already said, you’ll find most options PS offers also in Krita but not all, and that is because of the primary dedication of each, whereas Krita is a software mainly meant for creating art from scratch, PS is initially meant to further manipulate existing pictures and here mainly photographs.

Perhaps you want to have a look about how the creators of Krita see this, it is described on the first page of Krita’s well written and high informative manual:

https://docs.krita.org/en/tutorials.html

In case of further questions feel free to ask.
And, by the way, the concept of clipping masks in Krita is different from that in PS, try to ask the manual on it.

Simply import a photo, that would get to your canvas, or if you want to paint something from scratch, use the shortcut CTRL + N or the menu “File” → “New” and create your first canvas in Krita. It is highly recommended to use the colorspace that is preset in Krita, especially if you don’t have deeper knowledge about color profiles and color spaces.

By the way, if you import a photo, I would immediately create a copy of that layer, that is called background, and lock that copy, this way you can not destroy your original, at least not simply by a standard mishap.
And for everything else, it is good to take a look in every menu and if you don’t understand anything use the search box in Krita’s manual which you can call via shortcut F1 out of Krita.

Argh, thank you @sooz, I’ve completely overseen that @SJP24 could have misinterpreted the forum Krita-Artists.org as the program Krita which has to be downloaded and installed first!
Sometimes I’m blind!
