Working on getting a more cinematic feel, doing some keyframe sketches. Felt like getting the hand right would get me into trouble with going into too much detail, result is you can’t really make out what’s going on here. I do like what happened with the pod in the background.
Spent most of today working on that. Found references for the different types of folds, tried to digest what makes them work, and then went to try to do drapery from my head based on that understanding.
The zigzag, spiral and half-lock folds kind of seem like almost the same thing to me. I guess I didn’t paint a very good example of zigzags, though.
I’m thinking of doing more stuff with the Astronaut character in fantasyland, but I want to be able to do a better job with the clothing in particular. So more studies on that. And just to keep it fun, doodled this composition and decided to flesh it out a bit more. Even used a little photobashing just to try it out, not much but it did somehow help visualize what I’m going for.
I have this story in mind that hadn’t quite clicked, but I think I know how to treat it now, at least the start of it. I’m looking to do keyframes for the whole thing, which is a bit of an undertaking at my current speed, but also probably exactly the kind of practice I need. So with that in mind, I went in to make some thumbnails, trying to express just the minimum necessary, not getting into any kind of actual design issues at all. Just surveying the grounds, sort of.
I’m liking the workflow I’m falling into here, it feels like I’m able to explore and discover the frames instead of needing to know exactly what’s going to be there before I start painting.
I would love an artbook of this world you created. Then I realized i probably nowhere near where you are to actually get a physical copy in a reasonable price because shipping will double the price.
awesome set - it makes me want to know the story of this world.
Thank you for your kind words, @kaichi1342 . I have to ask, are you referring to the astronaut stuff or this newer thing? I assume the astronaut fantasy world.
In either case, I think I have quite a bit of painting to do before I could fill a book!
Spent most of the day on fundamentals. The rest, on this project - added a frame, will need a few more to get to a decent cutoff point in the story. Fleshed out the first frame, I’m trying to find a level of finish that is just enough to do the job, trying not to go into design any more than necessary, just the storytelling at this point.
a little tweaking. Wow, that 2nd frame turned out contrasty! I didn’t see that while painting at all.
And then I got stuck painting this. Too stubborn to admit the lighting just can’t be this way, I guess. I don’t want to add a directional light here in the foreground, but I also have a hard time making it work without it. Maybe after a break.
OK, I found myself struggling too much, so time to do some learning. There’s no end of things I need to get better at, but I’m trying to hone in on composition and lighting, and how to show them in a frame. To that end, I’m doing some studies of frames, in this case from “Y - the last man”. I liked a lot of the lighting and colour they use. In addition, I’m looking at work by Alexander Mandrandjiev, frankly just trying to copy what he does.
I did make another, not sure if I should post it here as it has a bit of nudity. But I’m quite happy with it, so I guess, better ask for forgiveness than permission @raghukamath ??
Same method. It sure is nice not having to think about good composition and lighting, since someone’s done that already! And since I cribbed even the painting style, very little thinking required at all. Just need to get to the point where I can actually do these from scratch…
I think the images are fine since they don’t highlight any body parts too much.
On the other hand I am not satisfied with our current implement of NSFW tagging mechanism on the forum. I wish it would be made for one post on the topic rather than marking entire thread nsfw. Also it doesn’t work well now. The current method is a hack and is getting broken when the forum software updates. May be we can somehow do away with the censorship.
At first, some composition studies, from “Back to the future”. I’m working on some frames for a short film where the director said the way that was shot was kind of a reference for him, so I’m trying to see if I can find something in it that feels right. Need to do these studies anyway, so may as well get two birds with one stone.
The first ones I did were intentionally abstract, mostly trying to find the masses and angles in the frames, how it reads and why. side by side are two different interpretations of the same frame.
Then some croquis, I’m trying to bridge the gap between my storyboard sketches and life drawing a bit more. It seems 1 minute is a bit too short for what I was trying to do, 2 minutes seems like a pretty good time.
And finally, a brief representative study of a frame at the bottom right. Not great, but that’s how it goes.
A “study” of a Wheel of Time frame. The frame jumped out at me when watching, I wondered how it would look with golden light and much less hitting the character’s face.
