I can't draw on Krita with my graphic tablet

Type of device* : Laptop
Brand and version of the device: Lenovo (don’t know the ver., will find that info later.)
System** : Windows 10

* graphics tablet
** Windows, + version 5.1.5

I can’t use my graphics tablet to draw in Krita. At first I always dragged the canvas whenever I tried to draw so I tried fixing it by going to configuration and changing the button used to move the canvas around. After that I no longer moved the canvas around when trying to draw. But now the problem was that nothing showed up. Everything on the tablet tester shows up fine, even the pressure. I can draw with my mouse too. But nothing happens when I try drawing with my tablet. I have used the same tablet to draw on my computer, on which I also use Krita and I’ve never had a problem there.

Hello @imonapp and welcome to the forum

Which graphics tablet (make and model) are you using?

Have you used any graphics tablet on the Lenovo laptop before?
Do you have any kind of gaming mouse or other peripheral that has its own installed driver?

Was that the configuration settings for the tablet?
Or was it the settings in krita itself?
What changes did you make?

Is that the tablet tester in the graphics tablet settings utility or the table tester in krita?

Using the tablet tester in krita, draw a short stroke with variable pressure and then copy-paste some tablet event records to a reply here.

Is this a different computer from the Lenovo laptop?

I didn’t realise I left so much loopholes. I use Xmart GT-9622 as my graphic tablet. I don’t own any other tablet and therefore have never used any other on the laptop. I think I may have the driver of the mouse I used to use with my laptop, but that mouse is currently being used on my computer. I edited the configuration settings on Krita and changed some of the settings in the screenshots. I’m sorry that I cannot explain much, english isn’t my first language so I’d rather show my current settings. I changed the pan mode to the right button of my mouse. I used the tester in krita, here’s the copy of the short stroke: Stylus move X=97.47 Y=79.08 B=4 P=100.0% S=0.1 (DRAW)

I’m quite new to this website so I’m sorry to make this a big paragraph. Yes, the computer is different. It’s Windows 11 too. I think It’s a Dell computer.

The subject of graphics tablet problems is a rugged landscape covered in deep holes that you can fall down at any time.

Which version of Windows are you using?

It’s not a good idea to ‘fix’ tablet problems by altering the Canvas Input settings in krita.
That just covers over and hides problems and will cause more problems.
The tablet problems must be fixed first.

The mouse right button is also used to activate the Popup Widget, which is the popup palette for the painting tools and various context menus for other tools.
That will be a cause of confusion for future use.

When drawing with your stylus on the krita tablet tester:

That is wrong. It should be B=1.
B=4 is the signal associated with panning the canvas which probably explains why you dragged the canvas when you tried to draw.

B=1 so the mouse is drawing properly.

The mixture of mouse events and stylus events when drawing with the stylus is common on Windows systems but I don’t know why it happens. It seems to cause no problems.

My suggestions are as follows:

Go to Settings → Configure Krita → Canvas Input Settings and press the Restore Defaults button.

Go to your tablet makers website and download the latest Windows driver for the tablet.
Even if you had already go the latest driver for the tablet, uninstall the current driver then do a full power down restart of the Lenovo. Then install the driver according the the tablet maker’s instructions.
Some require the tablet to be connected when this is happening. Some require it to be disconnected while it is happening.
Then do a full power down restart of the computer.

Run krita.
Open the tablet configuration/settings utility and see if it has the ability to create separate profiles for different applications. If it does then create a profile for krita and always select that profile when making any changes to the tablet settings.

There will probably be an option called ‘Windows Ink’. Disable that option.
Open the krita Settings → Configure Krita → Tablet settings and select ‘Wintab’.
Press OK then Quit krita and close the tablet settings utility.

Start krita and start the tablet configuration settings utility then confirm that you have a profile for krita.
In the Pen/Stylus settings, set the two buttons to be right-click for the upper one and middle mouse-button for the lower button.
Set the tip to ‘draw’.

Close the tablet configuration/settings utility then use the krita tablet tester to check the operation of the stylus.
Drawing should be B=1, Panning is B=4, upper button is B=2.
The upper buttton should activate the popup palette when you use it on the canvas.

I saw from others that turning off the Windows Ink can fix the problem, although now I have a different problem- when drawing with no Windows Ink no pressure is recorded and in the tablet tester (in krita) the blue line dissapears, the stylus isn’t being recorded at all. Also I am unable to create profiles with my graphic tablet so that’s fun. The pressure is however recorded on different applications, that’s why I tried to fix the problem by changing the settings on Krita. I did everything that you advised me to do and still, the only application that can’t record pressure is Krita. I’m using Windows 10.

I don’t know if this is helpful or dumb but I found this manual for your tablet. I can’t read the language. Near the end of the manual, it seems to show how to use different apps with the tablet (iDraw, iNote).

If you can’t read the manual this will be no help but it’s all I could find.

I do have the manual, I fully understand it, although iDraw is the app that I use to draw with the graphic tablet on my phone, I cannot draw on any other app with the tablet except that one, otherwise I’ve read the manual. Although, It’s a relief I can read the manual on my phone now too.

In that case, enable Windows Ink in the tablet configuration/settings utility and select Windows Ink as the option in the krita tablet settings to see if that works.
Restart krita and close the tablet utility before checking again.

Use of Windows Ink can cause other problems because of the ‘helpful’ way that the Windows operating system adds ‘useful’ signals, such as creating a right-click signal if you press and hold the stylus on the screen. That can be disabled with the Windows ‘pen’ settings.

With the krita tablet tester, what are the event records when you use Windows Ink and what are they when you disable Windows Ink and use Wintab?

The problem was the B=4 signal when drawing. A B=1 signal is needed.
That is a problem with the tablet/stylus settings or behaviour.

Did you create a specific profile for krita in the tablet configuration/settings utility, if it has that ability?

Thank you so much. I selected Windows Ink as an option and restarted krita. Now everything works! just in case, here are the records for when I use Windows Ink: Stylus move X=148.61 Y=89.27 B=1 P=63.8% S=2.0 (DRAW)

It’s obvious that without Windows Ink it just doesn’t record my stylus at all, therefore no pressure is recorded. I also can’t create profiles, it’s just not a setting that my tablet has. Although, thank you for the help and feedback! Now I can use Krita succesfully.

YAAAAAY! :+1:

It’s always the tablet or its settings or the driver or the operating system interactions with the driver or third party peripheral drivers interfering with the tablet driver or third party keyboard/mouse interpreter-modifier utilities doing weird stuff. It’s a minefield!
