I tried going a bit line-less

I tried to draw without line art. What do you think?

I think it looks good and it’s not ‘better’ or ‘worse’ that with line art (I’ve just had a look at your previous work with line art).
I’m thinking about saying it looks ‘less constrained’ but I’m struggling for the correct expression. I’d say it’s a good new technique for you.

Thanks! I always use line art whenever I draw so I’m curious about not using a lot of lines in the piece aside from using it as a means to separate different parts of the same color. I notice some digital artists doing it so I want to try.

The color blocking process was a bit tricky because without line art I struggle to color without making it look…chunky?

A thing you could do is use narrow fixed-width line art but do colour blocking with a Fill tool that has Grow Selection set to 3px or whatever is needed to send the colour fill under the line art to meet the colour fill from the other side of the line. Then remove the line art after all the fills have been done.

Hmm that sounds like a good idea. I’ll try that.

Great work, you don’t need the line art as long as you learn to use the same mental processes that you do use as you do the line art.
Drawing with paints is the real deal.

Actually I really like this approach for your style, I think you might want to continue with it for a bit to see if takes you places.
