Shading is really about lighting, about how light interacts with the forms and illuminate things. You might need to study the basics, like how to shade a sphere basics.

You can do very similar to how you do it with pencil but that would not be the most optimal way.
Since you are doing cell shading, a better way would be to do the shading in another layer bellow the line work. Paint the shadow colors in and erase until you get the proper shadow shapes.

LOL, we both tend to have issues with time, from end of October to your new account creation, ~ three days ago, is not almost a year, but ~ a half.
