I'm new to digital art... help

Please can I have some advice on how to start with digital art. I have no experience at all. I use windows and a drawing pad. I would get a tablet but I can’t afford that so i want to make do with what I can. I use the Huion Note pad to draw so i can use actual paper and pencil to do it, but that defeats the point of using digital art. So any advice, tips or YT videos are appreciated.

Welcome! Do you have experience in drawing traditionally? Colors?

Tell us more about the style you’re going for and what you need help with, if it’s more technical like “how do I separate lineart from the background in a scan/photo” or general art pointers.

I agree with Celes. We need more information about your goals beyond the “digital art” blanket, as it covers all sort of styles and methods. How one would approach mimicking a traditional Oil painting style, could be greatly removed from the methods used to do cell shaded anime/cartoon art, and different again from trying to do something like pen and ink work. And even each of those have different methods to them.

It’ll be rough going without a tablet or display tablet, though. I started out with a mouse years ago (because at that time tablets were only getting started and cost a literal fortune, in comparison to what we have available today).

I’m sure you can learn a lot by going through the Krita Manual!

In principle, you can make art without using a graphics tablet. In the beginning, I would draw on paper, do the final artwork in ink, and then scan it with a very primitive and cheap scanner. Here is an old example from 2006.

I was able to colorize and give some effects with the mouse, using some specific tricks and brushes. Here is the previous drawing, colored.

In one of my jobs, I drew and colored everything with the mouse, more or less like this. I used a brush that gave a dot effect, like here:

That brush was great, but depending on the image, it required me to make excessive movements with my hand… until, one day, I overdid it and my hand started to hurt.

I explained that I couldn’t continue working that way and suggested that they buy a Wacom, which was affordable. They agreed. I’m just saying all this to remind you that you should be careful not to overdo it when using only the mouse.
