Image Size and Canvas Size?

I have always found it peculiar the way that these two commands are worded in the Krita > Image menu:

  • Scale Image To New Size
  • Resize Canvas

Every time I am trying to find the appropriate menu I get a little confused for a second, maybe because the use of language is kinda inconsistent. I mean, why can’t it be Resize Image, Resize Canvas? Also Image Size and Canvas Size would be great imo, but maybe that’s not consistent with the rest of the menu.

Does anyone feel l like they can relate to my pet peeve?

Yep, slightly confusing but I’m not sure how it might be more clear. I’ve run into the same thing in many/most image programs.

Doesn’t bother me Resize vs Scale… but just the diff in image and canvas can be confusing a bit.

Resizing the canvas is a cutting version loosing parts of the image, scaling the image is a transformation of the whole image to a new size with different forms of loss of image information

Original:

Resized Canvas, leads to a loss of parts of your image (does not look identical)

Scaled down with cutting of an evenly distributed (same) amount from each border, with loss of image information (does not look identical)

Scaled down via transforming the whole image down (or up) to new size, offers the smallest loss of image information (the picture looks identical but is smaller)

It is a question of the chosen settings when scaling pictures, how your picture will be treated.

I think I didn’t make my point clear. I just think the wording in the menu needs to be something like Resize Image. I just don’t understand why the menu entry is so long: Scale Image To New Size. I mean, at that point, you might as well add the articles ‘the’ and ‘a’ to the sentence: “Scale The Image To A New Size!”

It’s a pet peeve though I agree.

If I remember correctly it’s because waaaaaaaay back then there was confusion about what the resize function actually does and that it’s a destructive operation, hence the use of the word scaling and the pretty detailed text. Also to differentiate it more from the resize canvas option.

I find it useful to think of the ‘canvas’ as a rectangular viewport onto an infinite image space. ‘Resize Canvas’ does not affect image content, it affects the size of the viewport and where the viewport is placed over the image.

So maybe ‘Scale Image Content’ would be a more specific description of what ‘Scale Image to new Size’ does?

I dunno… just Resize Image and Resize Canvas seem right to me.
