Is 5.2.15 released already? Appimage said it's not signed?

Krita was asking me to update today. I clicked on the download button/update button… when it was done downloading, the open console said the appimage is not signed. I went ahead and downloaded the appimage directly from the website, but I want to make sure that the update is legit and not a spoof.

Thanks.

I’m on kubuntu 24.04 btw

I have had that same thing happen the last two days with 5.3 appimage. I am on Kubuntu 25.10.

According to the website the latest stable AppImage available is 5.2.14
However there seems to be a 5.2.15 version already on the server (just not linked on the website and not officially released I guess) and that might be what triggers the update message.

@swfldremn1 the 5.3 version is a pre-alpha version (Krita Next). This is basically a developer version but I can’t tell you if it’s normal for them to be unsigned.

In any case, the PGP signatures that the website offers (for AppImage) are only for 5.2.14 or older.

Thank you @Takiro

I get a message on the side also that says I need to restart for it to work. Coming from the website I have been just restarting. I am new to the appimage version, starting just a few days ago to check out 5.3. Not solid with Linux yet, so basically was using the flatpak version.

I’ve just downloaded the 5.2.15 appimage from the stable section of the main site server and it runs and works on Linux Mint 21.3 with no problems or warning messages (except for saying that the database needed to be updated).
I thought that checking for signing was a Windows thing (which I find very annoying)?

It’s not the same as a signature for windows, it is a way for applications that have auto update capabilities to check if the download came from the correct source. The reason it did not happen for you is probably because you manually downloaded it and didn’t use the AppImageLauncher or Krita’s own update method, I assume.

When checked previously the download archive did not have a signature for the AppImage of 5.2.15, the version is also not available from the start page which makes me think it was uploaded to prepare for an official release that is about to happen.

Correct  Thank you for the explanation.

Dmitry build it 3 days ago via the CI build system, its SHA-1 hash is
SHA-1: bc1b53d1017863af29983141b825e8960bbaa075
which corresponds with the hash cited in the belonging file:
Krita-Stable-x86_64.appimage.zsync
Currently, you find this release in the build system on page 4 together with the seemingly upcoming releases for all other operating system, so Windows, macOS, and several Android builds for the different architectures. The AppImage contained in the build archive is identical to the one you can already find among the other releases currently hosted in the “Stable” branch at

I guess more official is unofficially impossible.

@swfldremn1 as for all the linux versions i have tested, the appimage is best and most stable… at least for debian based distros.

thanks @Michelist for the update

it is habit and desktop preference for me. I like a clean desktop, with task managers that hide when not in use. And I hate having to scroll through menus/ folders to find the program. If I could pin a appimage to my TM and have it auto update, deleting the old, I would be in heaven. For now I have it on my desktop with the smallest icon possible and it drives me nuts.

Edit: (a few hours later) I finally found a way online to add a desktop shortcut, so I can pin to my Task Manager. Not sure if the updating everyday will effect it, but if not I am staying with appimages. fingers crossed.
