Is it possible to reopen closed posts on this forum?

Most of the posts I’ve come across have been closed automatically after 30 days, but some of them related to Krita functionality have not been answered.
For example this post here, Resize Vector about vector line thickness re-sizing when transformed I came across when I had the same problem. The existing replies do not answer the question, which is to tell the poster that they should change the shape tool options to use global coordinates. When I found this is the answer on my own, I came back to post it, but I couldn’t find a way to reopen the question to do so, so the next person like me who comes across it can get the answer.

Is there a way to reopen automatically closed posts, and if not I think that would be a very useful feature to add. It may be too late to help the original poster, but those who come later with the same problem or a solution could then add to the knowledge base.
cheers

Hi @micbay - Yes, we can reopen posts that have auto-closed. I’ll open that one for you.

Thank you for thinking of this.

Cool, I’ll add what I figured out to it, thanks.
Is there a reason, general users can’t reopen threads? A lot of other forums I’ve been on allow that. Or perhaps is there a more direct line to request an admin reopen a thread other than having to post a question to do so? Even with your super fast response, I would imagine most people, including myself, would more often than not just not bother.

This forum gets a lot of new accounts that join to post a question but never return. That’s a shame because, in this case, 3 helpers jumped in and wanted to assist but the OP never logged in again. Future searchers can be frustrated by these unfinished requests so thank you for asking for the post to be reopened.

Usually we like to keep a thread dedicated to the OP. When threads are left open (some of them are) we get new posters appending unrelated questions which then requires an admin to go in and pick out the off-topic stuff and create a new thread. Also, all the participants of the older thread could get pinged only to find out the new comment has nothing to do with the topic they had joined.

PS - Not to mention spammers who seem to love appending crazy things to older posts. :upside_down_face:

Thanks for the additional info, I totally understand the need to close threads in a timely manner.

Might be nice to have some form of recommended re-open request process mentioned in the FAQ for cases like this one.

Maybe there could be a dedicated category for re-open requests, or a ‘closed thread solutions’ category that users could post a potential solution an admin could review, then update the referenced thread if they deem it applicable. Perhaps posts in those sections might need to be filtered from general search and closed to everyone except the OP and mods to avoid getting spammed and confused with standard forum posts.

Just some thoughts I had, of course you know your biz, and I can appreciate the complexity that can’t be seen from the outside.

Suggestions are always welcome. I’m going to move this topic into the site feedback category. You never know…

To check any proposed solution, to decide if its applicable, the original problem would have to be simulated and the proposed solution tested.
Or a moderator/administrator would have to decide if it ‘sounded reasonable’ and if it was ‘sensible’ to add it.
I personally would have problems checking proposed solution for Mac problems or even thinking about them.

The forum runs on a standard Discourse platform server so if a functionality is not available then it’s not reasonably possible to add it.

It is possible for anybody to contact a moderator using Direct Messages but this is discouraged except for reporting serious problems.

Regarding proposed ‘solutions’, I didn’t mean determining if they are correct and marking it a solution, just whether the new post, whatever it says, is a valid user reply to the closed topic, ie not spam, and reopening the topic for posting.

In trying to post a helpful update to a closed post, I found no process for me to do that on this site other than to make a new topic to ask what to do. Providing some clear, dedicated, avenue for users to make contributions to closed topics is the root feature suggestion I’m making in this feedback.

Maybe that’s providing a link or general, non-person specific, email in the FAQ that a user can use to request to reopen a topic. Whatever can be, or is best to do, I have no idea, it’s just a problem I ran into using this forum and wanted to provide feedback in that regard.

I think it’s best to do what you did by posting your intended reply as a new topic (Site Feedback category) then ask that your reply it be added to the topic that you link to.

A moderator will read your topic and would be able to move your reply to the targeted topic then delete your original topic.

If you think a post is closed and need further discussion you can create a new topic and link the older closed post in the topic referencing the earlier discussion. And continue the discussion in the new thread .
