Just wondering; is Krita going to be available on android devices after Google goes through with this? (link below) The playstore version at least, is it safe since it’s in the store? Or will it go the way of Krita on ipad (which doesn’t exist due to apple regulations, if I’m not mistaken). Could it be side-stepped by like, putting the tablet in developer mode or something? (that’s a thing, isn’t it?)
I don’t understand computer stuff, sorry. Something about apps having to jump through a lot of hoops to be able to install on android devices. Is it all android versions, including tablet os built on it? (Thinking of the wacom movink pad and xp-pen notepad, but curious for other android tablets too. )
Or will I need to disconnect from internet before 2027 to keep my new android drawing tablet working? I’m totally open to do that, I can use pen drives to transfer the paintings. I only bought it to use Krita on it.
I hope they back down, I don’t like them trying to control hardware I purchased. Feels like when HP made those printer subscriptions that would keep your printer from printing even if you still had ink…
Anyhow, is Krita safe? Do we need to fight for it?
It should be fine our this case, since there’s an organization behind it, not just a natural person. So it’s just another hoop to jump through.
I’ll probably look at it in more detail for both Drawpile and Krita once it gets closer to the date where they’re implementing it if they don’t back down, but it should just be a matter of registering the organizations with Google and sprinkling their blessing on it when publishing a new version.
Well, on a technical level, it involves cryptographically signing the executable. You use half of a cryptographic key to calculate a big number and attach it to the file. Google has the other half of the key and can do some more calculations to verify that the signature is real with high confidence.
But that’s all pretty techy, so it’s easier to think of it as sprinkling magic Google dust on the application and that’s close enough.
I think we only have to register with them once and then can release applications without having to send them for review or whatever, so those betas should still be available as normal. But I haven’t wasted time looking deeper into it yet (if anyone else knows, feel free to write it here, that might save me some time later.)
I hope so. And from the bottom of my heart; thank you and everyone working on Krita for making such an amazing drawing program. I find it to be the best option out there, including the top paid ones, for drawing. Nothing else comes close. I’ve tried quite a few and I’m picky.
I’d happily pay for it. Actually, it was a while since donating, I should go do that.
I guess to update this: Google opened up the verification. However, from what I’ve read, some developers that have attempted to go through it got stuck in a loop. If that happens, there is no way out because Google provides no support. You have to get a lawyer or use some other formal complaint mechanism of your country or the EU or something to get them to fix the situation.
So the situation remains unchanged: we’ll sit and wait for now instead of playing guinea pig for Google’s unfinished processes. Or maybe they’ll reconsider and we won’t have to deal with it at all.
I suppose I’ll switch of wifi on my wacom movinkpad.
I would worry about using a non-android OS on it, considering the wacom pen and stuff. I don’t know computer-stuff but I feel like there would be some sort of drivers that might be less optimal since it’s pretty niche…
I’m curious and worried about how they will deal with stuff like bank-identification, commuter ticket apps, parking apps etc if the verification process goes in a loop. On one hand, if those mess up they will be forced to fix it. On the other.. if they mess up, I won’t be able to pay my bills. And it’s quite scary how dependent we suddenly are on one or two huge actors (I guess the banking app works on iphone too). Especially if EU sticks to the plan with the age verification app on phones only…
Would even a phone OS such as graphene work, since the banking app needs to run through the google store? (it does now, they say, but after this mess?)
