Is the a filter I can put on a layer that transforms a grayscale image to black and white?

So that the lighter than midtones turn white and the darker than 50% grey get turned to black. Thank you. If there’s a way to change that threshold so that it can be at any grey I can pick that’d be a great help as well.

maybe try the levels filter?

I believe you can use the levels filter to do that. I’ll post a screen capture in a minute.

If you want a definite black-white transition then it’s the Filters -> Adjust -> Threshold. This tends to give pixellation of the borders, depending on the nature of your image.
The Levels filter, as noted above, can be used to give a local grey transition range that smoothes out those otherwise pixellated edges but it’s not a purely binary image.
