In ps, we can draw a box where the object is generally in and ps will automatically detect the subject and do a clean selection of it.
For example, with any human subject, it does a really good job of selecting it and separating it from the bg even if bg and the human subject is on the same layer and the bg is complex as well as the subject. Was wondering if Krita has something like that or is planning to implement this in the future as sometimes we want to paint things on the same layer or can mistakenly paint on the wrong layer, etc and this helps with that.
There isn’t a working one yet, but there is some code hanging around just waiting for some one else to finish it. I am the main author of that patch, and there is a bug with generation of selection which I was never able to solve, and I am no longer able to build Krita. The rest works as expected. Maybe some day this will get looked at, but I lost hope of that.
The OP has probably since moved on to other things but actually there is a solution to this problem right here on the forums as of August:
And here’s a link to the Github:
The technique is an AI based technology called ‘Semantic Segmentation’. It’s the same technology found in Photoshop’s smart object tool and there are even some Apache 2.0 licensed versions.
In Windows it’s very easy to install the addon, in Linux it can be a bit harder; but the guide works.
It is a remarkable tool and I have personally tested it on windows and Linux and found it it be exactly what you’re asking for.
Happy Krita painting to anyone stumbling upon this.
You have no idea how happy that makes me, as someone who has been under Adobe’s thumb since 2012; working in companies where third party software providers devour all overhead to leave nothing to the salaries of artists.
And I’m sure @Acly is glad to know that his addon is making this kind of difference.
In the future I may be wishing to help close the gap more… there are after all a number of things that Photoshop does which Krita can also do with the right set of addons… Some of it takes courage because Photoshop has very little regard for the arguments against some of what it offers.
But they literally banned us from running older versions of Photoshop on Linux or other OS’s. How insidious and aggressive and heavy-handed can a company get before people are sick of it. Like Linux was a deadhorse they had to beat extra hard instead of you know; noticing that people wanted to pay for a Linux version and using their business intelligence. Most of the cash cow: hollywood have linux back there in the server room; while Adobe amateurs tell you that nobody who owns Linux is willing to invest in good software so why bother selling it to them.
Perish the thought that the world would find themselves sick of Windows and Mac and want freedom from privacy invasion. Perish the thought that it would catch up and become better than what our 1 percent overlords decided was our future of owning nothing and being happy.
They leave us with no choice but to replace their entire software library like robin hood of FOSS. Not just replace but run rings around and leave behind in the dust. It’s revolutionary but it’s been a long time coming to set the score for the benefit of all humanity.
To go from a future where nobody owns anything and is supposed to be happy; to a future where everyone owns everything, independent of our masters.
Some people are just fed up of being screwed over. We just want to create, man!
Starving kind of gets in the way of creation anyhow.
I wish you all the best in your journey and hope you enjoy your newfound freedom.
