Is there a way to change the size of brushes midstroke with a static input device?

just to get into things; krita’s brush size keybinds dont seem to allow for changes in brush size midstroke; only until after you let up any particular line. I really enjoy using a decidedly static standard mouse, and while ive been able to find solutions for a lot of my qualms with it, this one has been stumping for me a bit.

i kind feel finding even a manual way to do so would open up a lot for me stylistically; anyone have any ideas on how i might be able to get around it?

I use vanilla krita, though im down for plugins or really any suggestion. Also not sure what might else be handy to share, let me know

(ps: uhhhh sorry for the double post! Im new, didnt realize i was off window for the text box, and found out pressing spacebar twice off window would just post my topic. My panic deletion did not go well… my b)

Krita is made to change line size during a stroke by responding to pen pressure. There’s no way to do that with a mouse. The mouse will always register 100% pressure.

I know this isn’t what you asked, but there is a way to adjust stroke size after the fact by working in vector rather than raster. If that’s something that interests you, Krita has some vector capabilities but Inkscape is so much better as it’s 100% vector and is a wonderful app.

I suppose you might try the Assistant ToolsPerspective” grids, though I don’t know how effective they’d be for what you’re attempting. You’d need to create a grid over the area you’re going to make the line, with one side narrower than the other, and then draw within the box (be sure to set the brush presets Size option to use “Perspective” as well). In the example below, I used a mouse to draw the various lines over the two grids. I used the snap feature on the left lines, and the Dynamic Brush Tool to freehand the arrow line on the right.

You could play around with the distance, fade or time curves in the size tab in the brush editor. These work without pressure.

change the size of brushes midstroke with a static input device?

It makes me remember of someone, 20 years ago − a TVPaint artist − who hacked a sort of sewing machine pedal to manage brush size. I always was curious how useful such a device might be. Same for knobs, I always wondered what if I had one for managing opacity.

Do you mean this one?
They hacked the wacom driver for all kinds of funky inputs. I loved this channel. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

oh my goodness, thank you all for all the thoughtful and prompt suggestions! nice to know how krita handles things, makes sense it does it that way. i def equally appreciate any alternatives or ideas mentioned too. ill address em in order of post cause im wierd

-Actually, while im not positive about wanting to come back to vector atm, it would solve every issue i have with mouse… and i kinda forgot about it tbh. ty great alt suggestion sooz! and for the software rec there too…

-oh perspective grids are interesting… while i could see it mb having limitations, i also can see it facilitating a lot too. definitely gonna explore, ty for letting me know about that Someone!

-ill definitely check out the brush editor stuff, that sounds great to explore too. thanks del

-i was thinking about a solution of sorts to artificially set a pen pressure with something external, but i dont quite have the knowledge base to make it happen without some study…
i was just thinking of keybind spam too, actually getting a footpedal working there is great. i always had spare thoughts about them and knobs too haha. ty for the tag team with this info and the vid Deevad and del! definitely will be where i start if im feeling getting something set up.

sorry for the long one, thank you all again!
