Issue opening heic files

Type of device* desktop
Brand and version of the device:

when opening heic files in krita they appear as blank.also when saving file as heic krita crashes without error

It’s probably bug 515714. To avoid it, either downgrade to 5.2.14, or use the latest nightly build.

how to downgrade without unistalling first?

Downgrading an installed Krita can be very difficult. The best option here is to use the portable version instead of trying to remove the installed version without any remains, which can be hard to impossible even with registry cleaning tools. The issue is that often Krita’s current version number remains somewhere in the depths of Windows without us knowing where (I probably have spent days to find it out without success. One could think it is buried in the file systems ADS (Alternate Data Streams)).

So, better go for the portable, then you won’t have this issue, and you can use the 5.2.15 beside the portable version, but not simultaneously.
Here you can get the previous Krita as portable version:
https://download.kde.org/stable/krita/5.2.14/krita-x64-5.2.14.zip

To “install” the portable version, you have to follow these steps:
The folder in the archive krita-x64-5.2.14.zip has the same name as the archive, a fact that sometimes leads to misinterpretations.
So, you have to unzip the folder krita-x64-5.2.14 which is contained in the archive krita-x64-5.2.14.zip into a folder of your PC where you definitely have full access rights, desktop and downloads are usually such folders. On standard installations of Windows, you can usually also unzip it into the root of your system drive C:\.

So, in Explorer you have to do a double click on the downloaded archive krita-x64-5.2.14.zip, and then you’ll see the folder krita-x64-5.2.14 inside which you then can grab with your mouse and drag it to the folder you want to start your portable version from, let’s say your desktop. After Explorer unzipped it to the chosen folder, you enter the unzipped folder via a double click and can start Krita from there using the shortcut krita.lnk in the root of the folder.

If you alternatively want to create a shortcut on your desktop to start the portable version directly from your desktop instead of always entering that folder first, you have to do a RMB (right mouse button click) on your desktop, choose New > Link, in the opening dialog click on search, and then in the next dialog you have to browse to the Krita executable so first enter the folder krita-x64-5.2.14 then go into the folder bin and there scroll down to the file krita.exe, select it and click the OK-ButtonÂą to confirm your selection which will bring you back to the former dialog where you can click on Next in the following dialog you can enter a name for your new link, maybe Krita 5.2.14 portable, and then, to finish the shortcut creation, you can click on the button Finish.

Âą The button texts may be differently named, but you simply need to choose those with the same meaning, this is because I only have a German Windows and have translated the buttons names.

updated to latest version 5.2.16 and i now i get that file format contains unsupported features when i open heic images…

edit:also tried portable version and same issue

edit2: 5.2.11 portable open them ok

any update on this?

I’m having the exact same issue. I tried all the different versions mentioned here on Windows and I also tried with my Linux installation. These are just basic .heic files from an iPhone 16.

Is there any fix at all? Even a plugin I can install?

there is Converseen on Linux that is a file converter. It has .heic, but I have never converted a .heic file and not sure if on anything, but Linux

this is not a solution.i dont want to convert heic to jpg or other format

This is a different issue than bug 515714, so I’ve reported it: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=517241

I was not trying to solve your situation. Wish I could, but I replied to RetroRGB and what he had posted.

Thanks very much. I just finally moved over to Krita full-time and I’m also migrating to Linux as well. I promise I’ll learn how to submit proper bug reports soon, so I can help with this stuff. LOL, might take me a month or two to catch up after switching everything over though!
