It’s not a problem and normal and nobody will see it as such, I didn’t knew anything like that when I started using forums, everyone starts at some point.
A ping is the combination of the @-sign with a username, if directly connected like @George or @Michelist it will act as a ping and the pinged user gets a notification sign added for the ping in the list of new postings about being pinged.
And the forum will help you if you want to ping someone whose name you only vaguely remember. Just type the @ and add the first letters of the username, and you’ll see suggestions for existing usernames that start with those letters, beginning with users from the current topic you’re posting in.
