It’s like turning the Amplifier up to 11!
After watching the demonstration of the new fluid paint brushes in Painter 2023, I think Krita has more advanced brush engines that produce much better results.
Traditional paintings don’t usually have smooth blending between colors, even watercolor doesn’t fully operate that way (it mostly happens when using big wet brushes). Developing good bristle or smudge blend brushes that produce nice textures when mixing two colors seems to be a better way to achieve traditional looking brush works.
I haven’t used painter before, after watching some demos I am not interested…
I’m moving ahead with the compare and contrast…may post some WIP images…not sure if that is appropriate or not.
At this point … about 7 hrs in on both (bird) images it is all reinforcing my take on them both…
Krita is much more intuitive but the brushes, textures, and paper handling of Painter is to die for not sure I’m loving the ‘Fluid’ paint but in both cases I’m constantly learning brush modification and customization.
Here’s the WIP at this point (7.5 hrs each)
Masked Lapwing in Krita:
Masked Lapwing in Painter:
The one in Painter has a bit more shading and some extra color on the right hand side. This is making Krita’s version look a bit flat since it doesn’t have those done yet.
Yes, this is somewhat true…I did more finishing on the Painter version…the Krita version was a quick start on the image and I’m filling it in now…things should even up by the finish. …
There’s a heck of a lot of a lot of finishing to still do on the head/mask…particularly with the wrinkles which is the base reason for painting this one. I do some pretty good wrinkles with my pencils/graphite … hoping to learn to do similar with digital.
So after completing my painting - Masked Lapwing (having abandoned the Painter version almost from the beginning) I just went back to it (the Corel Painter version) and I really don’t like the way it is working I’m sure I could probably tweak things, but not liking how the chalks and pencils are working/blending/etc.
May keep fiddling with it but feel like I should just stick to Krita…much better user interface…brushes work more intuitively I think…
anyway…we’ll leave it there for now…and yes I do Love Krita!
