JP Color Mixer Brushes

I am a big fan of Clip Studio Paints oil brushes and color mixing system. I love the buttery way in which the paint mixes and the ability to control it with pressure. I have been trying to create a similar set of brushes in Krita. I have taken inspiration from some of Rakurris brushes and some others too. I started making variations of these brushes, changing parameters to try to get close to the same feeling. I still needed to familiarize myself with some brush settings in Krita that are structured quite differently than in CSP.

I am quite satisfied with the resulting brushes, which are still works in progress. I have used some brush tips and texture from other brushes, like the aforementioned Rakurri, Ramon Miranda and others (although it is not always easy to trace it back), plus some of my own brush tips. I don’t want to sell these so I hope the creators of these resources are OK with this use. If not, please get in touch and I will remove them or change them. I do intend to create further versions with my own textures and tips, but I will have to find the time to create them properly. The goal was to create brushes that feel and look more like traditional media.

Some brushes have a texture applied. With these, a dry brush effect is possible. To determine the amount of texture or the “dryness” of the brushes, adjust the Brightness slider under /pattern/options.
Another important feature to control the behavior of the brushes is the Color Rate slider. This determines the amount of “paint” on the brush: the lower the value, the lower the amount of color applied to the canvas. If the slider is set to 0, the brush acts purely as a blender. This setting can also be changed in the Pop-up Palette.

Most of these brushes are set up in such a way that low pressure blends the colors and increasing the pressure increases the amount of color applied. This way painting and blending can be done with the same tool. I enjoy using them with the Texture templates by Ramon Miranda, especially the water color one. As I do a lot of color picking and the regular color picker picks up the color from the combined image with texture, it would give the wrong values. Therefore I changed the default to pick from the current layer (under preferences/canvas input settings/alternate invocation).

I hope you can find some use for these brushes, which I enjoy using a lot. I would appreciate some feedback on how to improve the brushes.

EDIT: Hi everyone! I create a new set of brushes, partly new and partly further developments of these brushes here. Check them out in this thread:

They look interesting but it seems the bundle contains only one single pattern (DA_Paper_Pigment Dust.png) but no brushes?

I get the error message that the pattern used in the brushes:

I have tried several things but can’t seem to resolve this. Either a bundle is created without the brushes, or none at all. Any assisitance would be welcome.

These brushes look fascinating!

I found this older post - scroll down to find the solution from @Michelist. I hope it helps.

Bundle seems to be empty, no brushes. Please fix it.
You can see how there is no brushes, if you unzip the .bundle.

When you create the bundle you need to say Krita which brushes do you want to save inside.

  1. Tell Krita what do you want to save
  2. Select the brushes in this case as example.
  3. Be sure you save also brushtips, and patterns. to avoid possible errors.

Thanks for your comments. I had made bundles before but never ran into this issue. I have tried to create a similar texture and replaced it on all brushes (I had to tweak the settings somewhat). I think it should work now. Please try the updated link in the opening post.

Thanks! Your brushes have been a huge source of inspiration. I hope you find the time to try them as I would love your feedback.

Please note that for some brushes, “Overlay Mode” is activated, which means the colors on the current layer mix with layers below it. If this is unwanted, just uncheck it in the brush setting.

It works for me. Wow, these brushes are awesome! :+1:
I paint mostly with color smudge brushes and i’m very picky about them. I think I’m spoiled from using sai brushes for years. and your brushes feel very similar.

I’ve tried them a little and I really love how they feel. I think I will change some bits, but they are a really nice start.
Also the pencil is awesome!

I will try to finish this with only these brushes

I am really glad you like them. I will probably fine tune and experiment more with them as well.

Glad you finally managed to fix the bundle
Can’t wait to test them!

EDIT:
I’m… pretty sure I’m doing something wrong, regardless, I love them and their textures
(Used them with Deevad’s block glazing brush)
