JPG or JPG XL?

Curious about something. Krita can export files as JPG XL (*.jxl)

Is this a common file format for most book printers? I mean, is it readily acceptable to use it? I had to download and install a Windows extension in order to view these files in Windows Explorer. That right there would seem to indicate it’s not a standard that’s accepted everywhere. I’ve not done a side-by-side comparison of anything I’ve ever created, and I’ve been mostly happy with the results of standard JPG. What about online use like social media and such?

thx cheers

For printers, I would use PNG or WEBP with lossless settings. About the acceptance and how widespread it may be you probably better ask a search engine.

I suggest you read: JPEG XL - Wikipedia, especially the section titled ‘Industry Support and Adoption’

That is mentioned there.

Decisions about support and incorporation were still being made in 2025 and 2026 so it’s all a bit patchy, uncertain and not fully guaranteed, depending when you last updated your browser and which browser and OS you have.
Wait five years and try again :grimacing:

I do not see jpegxl being used in print industry yet. It is still at earlier stages of support.

hmm interesting ok thanks for the responses! Just for grins, I tried a couple of exports on work in process. The XL file seemed darker than the standard jpg. Too dark. It’s possible I didn’t have the correct settings for that format. Everything I’ve submitted for printing to Mixam (chicago based printer) started out as jpg. It seemed as if they converted the files to PDF before printing. But that conversion happened behind the scenes automatically as part of their customer portal. Ultimately the book looks great (but that required some gyrations with test prints).
