June/July Art Challenge: Mountains

Okay! So in light of recent events, I am starting off our next mini-monthly art challenge with the hopes that everyone can find a satisfying outlet for creativity! Last couple rounds have been really great, so hopefully @Corentin , @Smeep , @k-sena , @FireShepherd , @BadGirl2023 will be able to join this one too.

After enjoying the creative workout @BadGirl2023 gave us last month, I thought I’d alternate this time around with something, admittedly, a little on the easy end.

Challenge: Mountains

Mountains are simple yet majestic, so to the degree of desire, you can keep your entry quick & fun or get more expansive in your artwork, if that’s what you enjoy.

So the challenge is:

  • To include a single mountain or multiple mountains in your piece.
  • It would be cool if somehow the mountain was a focal point/feature, but, I stress, that is not necessary. Just as long as it is clearly in your piece.
  • And yes, you can include other elements beyond just the mountain/mountains (rivers, rocks, trees, etc.)
  • Also, a lot of very dramatic weather occurs around mountains, so playing around with more off-beat weather conditions is another way to really have fun with this.

And some ideas  :

The Classic Landscape: Distant mountain with flowing rivers, sprawling forest and lovely meadows. The quiet moment in nature.

Inside the Valley: The classic scenery seen in Alpine life or the Scottish highlands. Deep valley ravines with mountains flanking the sides.

Mountain View: Or there’s being on the mountain. Spectacular vistas seen from atop or within the mountainside. (Note: if buried within the growth on the mountain and the view is looking out, just be sure to show the change of topography as the view extends.)

Seasonal Changes: Mountains with trees can look extremely different depending on what the trees are doing with their leaves. You could have a lot of fun with colors.

Weather Patterns: As mentioned, crazy weather patterns tend to hit mountain ranges. A blizzard or a thunderstorm, dense fog, an avalanche, even a freezing glacial frontier, could make for some fun compositions.

Exotic Mountains: The more uncommon mountains found in the extreme climates of the earth. Desert ranges, Tropical Islands, the Arctic circle - even Volcanoes.

Rules:

  • It may not have any NSFW content

  • You can only post up to three images

  • Challenge duration: June 10, 2026->July 31, 2026

I’ve extended the challenge through July. With being a week into June, the summer months and the shifting of schedules/vacations, I don’t want this challenge to be a stress point. (If anyone has any other thoughts, please share. It’s easy enough to change.)

Please be sure to have fun & expand your creative side! :raising_hands:

So cool lof you to make a challenge of your own!!

You have amazing tips and examples, handy to ponder on and think about during the creation :face_with_hand_over_mouth: I’ve just been on a horseback track in French mountains so I am full of ideas and inspirations! Curious what everyone will make and yes, with warm vacation time wishing everyone a calm drawing adventure

Whoa, good for you @BadGirl2023 !!

That’s a really nice take on the pixel art genre! I like the slight variations you have of each color & that sort of vintage tinge border framing is a nice touch!

Thanks so much for your submission  !

Good for you @BadGirl2023! :raising_hands:

Very cool use of brushes to create the effect! I’ll have to look into those brushes myself. Very creative selection!

Here, I’ll try my first “officially” posted artwork and begin with this challenge. This began years ago as a test of brushes, recently I saw this challenge and thought: “Hey, why shouldn’t I fix the most obvious flaws and make this simple brush test a challenge entry?”, so here it is, my first officially posted artwork. Nothing special, but at least also nothing one has to hide for all costs.

Oh @Michelist I’m so honored!! This is so cool to see your first ‘official’ artwork!!

Solid brush test image btw! You really used the variety of brushes appropriately. The blossoming tree is so pretty and I especially like the detail of the water.

So glad to see your artwork!! Thanks so much for sharing!
