If you have separated figure and background on own layers, a simple method would be to select the figure layer do a RMB on it in the Layers Docker and select Layer Style... from the opening context menu, set a hook with Enable Effects to enable the use of the Layer Styles, set another hook in front of the effect you want to apply and click on the row of the effect to get shown the possible settings. Perhaps like in this screenshot:

But you can also go the route of using Blend Modes for this. An important help is your will and fun to play around with the options Krita offers, may it be Filters or whatever else, the best results for my works I found playing around, having fun. By the way, it is a good idea to make a backup of your work before you begin playing, not everything must be revertible, or maybe you run out of possible undo steps …

Layer styles don’t look the best for me

This one uses a destructive 3 layers with 25/100/200 gaussian blur in a group set to linear dodge

While on the right track it still isn’t there yet.

Also mentioning that I am using 16 float colour management.

Thank you for the great tip BTW.

I see, you are experimenting and that is great!

This bit depth is certainly justified in certain cases, but I would only choose 16 & 32-bit if I cannot achieve my goal with the usually sensible default setting of 8-bit RGB/A. There is a reason why this setting is recommended (but it is not a panacea).

Without being able to say for sure, I often get the impression that many people, with an inner attitude of “bigger is better,” push everything as far up as their machine can handle, most probably without being able to say why.

I came to that decision after seing that glow effects don’t work well with blur and gassing effects in linear dodge and color dodge, otherwise I don’t usually touch it, using a Samsung s9 tablet for drawing, there are visible performance hits inside larger projects with multiple layers that have non destructive filter layers added.

Prior to me starting krita learning, I was using gimp for photo composition 3d renders, so I have some understanding of the workload inside programs, just not krita and the awesome brush engines that it has…………yet

This sketch looks like it was painted on metal.
