Krita 4.2.9 Not Responding

Hey there!

I’m trying to use the newest version of Krita, but for whatever reason I can’t access it. Specifically, when I start the program, it shows the thumbnail of the painting girl, then within a few seconds, the white program window pops up and immediately says “Krita 4.2.9 – Not Responding.” I’ve waited for multiple intervals of time with no change in the message and have to end the application before I even get a chance to look at the program at all. This was the same problem I encountered last time (previously I had 4.2.7 installed and it gave me the exact same issue), and nothing I’ve done (re-installing the program, restarting the computer, etc) has done anything to solve the problem. Is there something I’m missing?

Hello and welcome to the forum

Where did you get krita from to install/use it and which operating system are you using?

There is obviously a problem with your computer or the installation process.
Have you recently tried installing any other applications and do they work ok?

How much RAM does your computer have?
Do you have plenty of space available on your hard drive?

Firstly, thank you for your warm greeting and apologies for my long-overdue response. I downloaded Krita directly from the official website. I am using Windows 10, and in regards to other programs I’ve recently downloaded, the only examples of things that I’ve received directly from the Internet are a lossless copy of the DOOM soundtrack and various free models and rigs from Autodesk Maya (I’ve also downloaded things off of Steam, Spotify, and other such programs). My computer has 16GB of RAM and 1.25 TB space on its D: drive; its C: drive has 147 GB available, but I’ve been shifting downloads to my D: drive since it has more free space.

Your computer has more than enough RAM and more that enough free hard drive space. I was wondering about downloads of installable applications and whether or not they installed and ran properly.
Running an installer from your D: drive shouldn’t make any difference.

To sidestep any potential installation strangeness, download the 64-bit ‘standalone’ portable .zip package from here:
https://download.kde.org/stable/krita/4.2.9/krita-x64-4.2.9.zip
Then Extract it, and in the resulting extracted folder, run krita.lnk.
If that works, do Help -> Show system information for bug reports then copy the contents and paste it in a reply here.
That may (or may not) be useful information to have.
If it doesn’t work, try running it as an Administrator.

The files I have clicked on to run the program have not changed anything, but I don’t know how to tell an .Ink file apart from the others. Firstly, is it “Ink” or “Lnk?” Secondly, is there a specific way to tell which file is the correct one?

There should be only one file and four directories (with some files inside); just double-click on the file.

But since it definitely either crashes or freezes, you should try getting the backtrace: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/dr_minw_debugger.html - you’d need to download https://download.kde.org/stable/krita/4.2.9/krita-x64-4.2.9-dbg.zip as well and unpack in the correct place, as the instruction shows.
