Krita 5.1.5 - Tablet Settings - Max Brush Speed - what value to set here?

Hi, new to Krita and trying to setup everything.

Question about tablet:
There is a “Maximum brush speed” setting.

The documentation says:
This sets what Krita should consider the maximum brush speed. You can find the maximum value by using the tablet tester.

In my case the tester meassures something from 1.x to to 2.x

But I assume that is not what should be put into the brush speed setting?

From what I can tell, it actually is…if I wiggle my hand really hard I can get over 20, but yea I set mine to 10 to get a decent control with brush curves, because realistically that’s as fast as I’ll ever move my hand in actual brush strokes.

If you make a brush preset that has an obvious property controlled by speed, you can draw at different speeds to see the effect then adjust the tablet settings Maximum Brush Speed control to suit your own idea of what a good maximum speed is for you.

I’d suggest modifying the Basic-5 Size so that it’s Size is controlled only by Speed with a straight line transfer curve from top left to bottom right.
That way, at maximum speed it would have zero size, an easily noticed thing.
Then draw with what you think are ‘fast strokes’ and see if the size goes down to zero.
If they don’t go down to zero then adjust the Maximum Brush Speed to your idea of what is good.

Thanks, I think I got it. Speed is a way to drive brush size - e.g. as an alternative to just pressure, right?
I copied a basic brush and let only speed be enabled for size.
This is a quick test with max = 10 and 4.
Is this the expected result?

Yes exactly, speed is a “sensor” you can use as input to control brush parameters, just like pressure, tilt, drawing directions and so on.

So the max brush speed setting defines the 0% to 100% range where you can control in the input => output mapping via curves in the brush editor.

If you move your stylus faster, it’s the same as if you press harder than the max pressure your stylus supports, it’ll just stick at 100%.

Your strokes look as expected to me, but you can see the effect better on strokes where you change directions a lot, say a zigzag line.

That looks normal, yes. Smaller numbers in that setting will result in the speed sensor capping out easier, which you see in your test image.

The precise value to use will vary, depending on how you draw and also your display resolution . I have a 4K screen and had to set it to around 30.

Thanks to all. Question answered
