Krita 5.2 freezes and memory meter goes red - is it a bug?

Hello there, I am posting to confirm if anyone has these issues with the latest Krita update.

Essentially when I’m use, my Krita freezes a lot, goes up in storage space when on the limited sketch layer and is overall slower to operate. I had uninstalled and reinstalled twice up to this point and it is affecting my efficient work load.

This had been going on for at least a week at this point. When the app is not in function, everything practically works like butter. It may just be my computer, so I made this account to ask if it’s a bug that everyone has?

Thank you for reading.

Hi @Bubbly

Welcome to the community.

You need to tell us which operating system you’re on (Android? Windows? etc).

Also, how much RAM does your device have?

When you say it’s using more storage, do you mean memory? Or do you mean when you look at your .kra file in the file manager, the file size is larger than expected?

And please show us a screenshot of your complete Krita window, while you have a picture loaded in Krita that shows this behavior for you.
Complete means including the status-bar, the title-bar, and nothing cropped/cut-off on the left or right side of your Krita window. And if you can show us in that screenshot the layer-stack as well as the tool-options-docker, it would be a perfect screenshot for us.
In case your picture is not suitable to be shown openly, then please camouflage it after you took the shot.

Hi! Thank you.

Sorry I’m still trying to figure out how this site works. When I talked about storage size, when drawing you know the bottom right slidebar that changes color based on how much you draw, that goes orange to red fairly quickly for me.

My computer is a Windows and for my computers RAM, I have 4.00 GB of RAM

The problem you’re experiencing is not a Krita bug – it’s caused by your device being very low in RAM.

You can make things easier for your device by closing everything but Krita. That means closing the browser completely, not just reducing the tab to the task bar. Don’t listen to music or have a video playing while you draw.

As @sooz wrote: This means your PC runs out of resources. And such leads to crashes and data-loss. You should close every other software running on your PC while using Krita, every time it begins to change colors save your picture to disc, close the picture and load it back into Krita. This frees up a little RAM.
But honestly, if your resources allow it, go for a better equipped PC.

Ahh but you see, I have absolutely nothing open but Krita and my drawing tablet when I use it.

Okay, if it’ll allow me to save it at all I will try. Thank you

I understand. 4 GB of RAM isn’t sufficient. I ran Krita on a laptop like that for about a year. It was quite a frustrating endeavour. I’m still using an old potato but this one has 6 GB of RAM which seems to be the bare minimum to run Krita on Windows - and I have to shut down everything else while using Krita. I know the manual says 4 is the minimum but I don’t believe that’s accurate.

Gee wiz. Krita used to run so beautifully. I may have to wipe all my data just for this project if I can email or find a flash drive to make it work for now.

Thank you so much, I’m relieved to have some answers.

whether laptop or desktop, you may have a empty slot for additional RAM. If this is so, you would maybe be able to add a compatible RAM card, which would be cheaper than a new complete system. If you go to the manufacture’s website, you should be able to get the specs of your computer, which hopefully shows a empty slot. This would be buying a compatible RAM card and installing. Other option is look for a compatible RAM card that is larger and replace the existing one, if the slot is not already at its maximum allowance. If you go to “Configure Settings”, then “Performance”/ “General”, it shows you how much RAM is available on your system and you can boost the percentage Krita can use. If you are not at maximum, you may be able to raise it some to help you get through what sounds to be a important project, but you would still need to save then restart Krita often to stay on the safe side. Hope you can get this resolved easily.

Deleteing files will not give you more RAM! Hard drive and RAM are completely different storage types. Hard drive is where you files go when saved, memory (RAM) is where programs are with their files when they’re running (simply said).

Trying to delete Files to get more RAM is like throwing away food from the fridge to fit more on your plate, it doesn’t work that way.

Like it was already said you’re maybe able to upgrade your device by installing additional or replacing the current memory. I’d go with 16 GB but you should have at least 8 GB in total. Memory isn’t that expensive.

While 4GB of memory is not a lot, I wouldn’t expect the memory bar to turn red unless you are working on a very large or complex (lots of layers or filters or animation) or high bit depth image. Is that the case?
How much memory does the statusbar say is being used? If you hover over it, it’ll also tell you what Krita’s using it for. Under Preferences->Performance->General, how much RAM and Swap is Krita configured to use?

For instance, on my tablet with Krita configured to use 50% (the default) of its 3GB RAM, eight 16bit RGBA 3480x4923px layers makes the memorybar orange (using 1.1GiB of RAM, of 1.4GiB). Nine of those layers makes it 1.2GiB, with a warning icon and the tooltip saying “WARNING: Out of memory! Swapping has been started. Please configure more RAM for Krita in Settings dialog”.
At that point, it still works okay (aside from being very laggy on this device in general), except if I try to do a demanding operation like resizing the image (even just by a few pixels), which makes it crash.

I only had four to five sketch layers open (plus background) and it was like this

In good news, I’m getting more RAM for my computer! So this should hopefully be fixed very soon!

10,050 x 12,050 pixels is the reason you’re using up all your RAM.

Why so large? Are you going to print this as a poster?

random access memory, is different from your storage space.
If you can afford an upgrade to a new system, it would be advisable  perhaps you could get yourself a Holiday gift?
If you need help locating a nice computer on amazon, there are plenty of folks here that can help, ( just mention your budget range ) 4gb of ram isn’t enough ( has not been for over 10 years ) to run most common programs.

Your Krita has to constantly swap used/needed RAM to be able to perform any action you do on canvas. As you can see there, Krita states to use 2.1GB of RAM! Windows itself needs about 2.5 Gigs or more to run halfway smooth, you are completely overstretching your computer’s capabilities.

The computer person I spoke to said that he will upgrade my hard drive to a solid state drive of 256 GB or my other option is 500 GB. However I will discuss this with him, he usually does computer fixes and upgrades. He says with either of these my computer should run smoother and such.

I currently cannot afford a new device so I can’t give a price range, but if I do, I will come back and ask. Thank you.

Yes I understand that now. Thank you so much for helping me. I will update once adjustments are done on my end.

ask your friend about RAM.
an ssd is nice for faster file access, but doesn’t fix this issue., as this is a hard drive and storage.
I reccomend at least 8gb of RAM
good luck!!
