Krita crashing/freezing issue

Hello all

I’ve been using krita for a fair while now and are experiencing crashes/freezing more frequently now than I used to, I’m running on krita ver. 5.1.4

Occasionally, whenever I do a brush stroke, midway through it completely freezes the canvas and the brush in place, leaving me unable to do anything. It also leaves these brush studders after closing and reopening krita on the document. Any idea what is causing this?

Please answer the following questions to provide more information that may help people to figure out what may be going wrong:

Can you update to version 5.2.2 which is the latest formal release?
Krita Desktop | Krita

Which operating system are you using?

Is your computer particularly old and/or low power?

Do you make sure to close all other applications when using krita? You should.

Does this happen when using a mouse or a graphics tablet or both?

Are you working on a particularly large or complex document?

Your answers to those questions will be useful and will probably result in further questions.

To answer these questions

Yes, I just installed the latest version of krita 5.2.2

I’m on operating system Windows 11

The laptop is 2 - 4 years old and is always connected to a charging port.

I only have other applications/browsers open to listen to music or to look for other things.

I use a Xp-Pen graphics tablet but use my mouse to select different tools.

And I use a document size of 3508x2408.

Trying to run a web browser or listen to music at the same time is a bad idea unless you have a huge amount of RAM. How much RAM does your computer have?

16.0 GB with 15.7 usable.

Two things I would check:

  • Open task manager while using Krita and watch the memory column. What percent is used when you’re working normally?
  • Hover over the dimensions on the bottom status bar to see if your device is doing any swapping. If there is anything other than a zero in swap, it means the device is struggling. If it’s really bad, the dimensions will get a yellow or red background.

Just checked it now doing some simple things in krita and it ends up in a total memory usage of 40%~

Besides that, there seems to be no inherit issues.

If it does end up happening again, I will update most likely with a video example of what happens during the crash/freeze.
