I found another thread on this forum reporting a similar error, but that thread was closed for some reason, and contained no obviously relevant suggestions, so trying again here.
Just downloaded and installed Krita 5.21 for first time on my Windows 11 tablet (Samsung Galaxy Book 12).
It seemed to install fine, with no errors, but on starting the app for the first time it throws error ‘No brush presents available. Please enable a bundle that has presets before continuing’
This message appears right beside the presumably standard list of pre-installed, pre-activated presets: Krita_Default_Resources.bundle, Krita_Artists_SeExpr_examples.bundle, and Krita_4_Default_Resources.bundle.
Why would the default install include only bundles without presets (if that is really the case , as the error message seems to imply)?
More importantly, how do I progress past this message? There are no options available from the import button on this dialog leading in the obvious direction of a bundle containing presets.
OK, looking at error log reveals Krita was also triggering silent ‘access violations’.

Please note that this is on a vanilla install of Windows 11, with no 3rd party virus checkers or other software that one might expect to cause such errors.
Does this mean that Krita is not actually Windows compatible?
What are the available solutions?
I see Krita is also offered via the Microsoft Store (paid version only) - do I try installing again via Microsoft Store, which presumably enforces some level of windows compatibility? Not very keen to spend the money before even trialling the product though.
OK, further update. Restarting Windows & Krita seems to have helped - this time it fired up without errors (so far).
A suggestion to developers that a Windows restart recommendation should be incorporated in setup, if this is the only way of avoiding first run errors.
I’ve never heard of that situation after any installation on a Windows system.
If it cleared after a Windows restart that may suggest something peculiar to your Samsunf Galaxy Book 12.
I can’t make any comment about the log error messages but someone who knows about interpreting those may come along to read and try to understand them.
You don’t need to. The Microsoft store version is exactly the same as the version from the official website and is a method of getting donations. Also, some people prefer to get things from the Microsoft store because they think it ‘feels safer’ than downloading from the big bad internet.
The truncated crashlog states that Krita’s resource library library tried to read from null (which obviously doesn’t exist), and Krita’s image library tried to read from 0x10 (which also did not exist). It would be useful to get the next few lines after those, which would tell which function Krita crashed in.
If Krita says there are no brush presets available, it failed to load the default resources somehow. And not just the bundles, but the default brushes in the paintoppreset folder as well.
If restarting your computer fixed it, then I suppose it was something odd happening with your system.

In addition to welcoming you, I’m chiming in as a Windows user to assure you there are many hundreds of thousands of us using Krita on Windows without seeing that message so hopefully it will never happen on your device again.

Yep, this can happen after misconfigurations or crashes for whatever reason, but it is the first time I hear about this issue in connection with a correctly fresh installed Krita on its first start¹.
