Krita won't open no matter what i try

Hi! I’ve been using krita for about 2 years now. The other day I updated my AMD graphics because other applications and my HDMI port was not working. Before I updated them Krita launched fine, but now it doesn’t even open. I tried installing the steam version as well and it doesn’t even launch.

I have tried re-installing the version I had been using and installing the newer version. I have reset and updated my computer and nothing has changed. I have also come to these forums and looked at solutions from 2022 & 2023 and none of them have worked for me, though I’m happy to try again!

I also spent a good amount of time in the troubleshooting window, and at a point it told me that krita was not compatible.

I would like any assistance or advice on this matter as I miss doing art :sob:

Thank you!

Can you get the crash log from Krita? And share your system details, such as dxdiag output or something? (I can’t share precise instructions for it right now)

My guess is that probably your graphics driver is incorrect, especially if it’s a laptop. Maybe reinstalling the latest compatible driver would help.

The crash log from krita only has something from june 8th - when one of my pieces did crash, nothing from today.

Dxdiag says there are no problems and my system details will be attached below.

Where would I find the latest compatible driver? And would installing that mess up the other programs i had been having problems with?

To provide complete information, you should share your DxDiag log, the text file created by “Save All Information”:

This will include details such the versions of the drivers and the type of hardware you are using.

If you previously changed the driver to resolve some problems, reinstalling another one could possibly re-introduce them, but you won’t know without trying. Your system is a probably a laptop, so it could have two graphics cards (CPU integrated GPU and mobile dedicated GPU). This alone can create some problems.

For branded systems, you usually go to your system’s manufacturer’s page (e.g. HP, ASUS, etc.) and look for support downloads for your specific laptop model. Then you look for GPU drivers, chipset drivers, etc. on their page.

You can try installing the common driver (e.g. from AMD page), but it’s hard to say if it will be more or less stable.

I looked up the laptop based on the system model, and the MSI support page has an ancient graphics driver.

You could consider picking up a new driver and see if it would work for your apps. This is assuming that your GPU is indeed RX 5600M.

Assuming this driver installs and works successfully, I would expect Krita to launch normally.

Ha! A shot in the dark, but great to hear  :tada:

BTW, given that you are running an AMD driver, I recommend you try switching your canvas acceleration to OpenGL (instead of ANGLE). It typically works better:

If somehow it’s not better, you can go back to the default renderer.
