Forgive me if I don’t get the formatting of this all correct, this is my first post on Krita

EDIT: (included most recent version of the piece.)

Beginning a piece to test out Krita for the first time. I intend to create something reminiscent of the pen and ink medium I work with traditionally. Here is the initial sketch

From here, to better structure the arm, I did a simple sketch of the forearm anatomy.

This led to the shrinking of the fingers from the original sketch, and some faint adjustments to the wrist and protrusion around the pisiform bone.

also tested some of the pens for the lineart as I wanted a consistent line unaltered by pressure (which I’m still adjusting to)

Finally, this is as far as I’ve gotten so far I’ve done the lineart of the hands and foream, and begun hatching of the left hand, using markers to indicare direction and density of the line work:

I’m happy with the right arm, left I’m not. It appears crooked and mishapen on the left side of the hand. I think the skin needs to be tighter around the knuckle of the pinky, and maybe adjust the angle of the forearm itself. I may just remove it all together until I’m ready to work on that arm.

Any help is greatly appreciated…

These all look really good! I like all the technical anatomy terms you use!

As for advice on the left hand, I’m no anatomy or perspective expert, but I think the thumb kinda starts a bit too low on the hand if the index finger starts that high up (or far back if you will) so maybe shifting the position of the thumb and fixing any lines that are messed up from that change could help :]

Thank you!! Yes you’re completely right, I fear the entire left hand needs to be completely redrawn! the knuckles defo need to be a bit lower so there’s less distance between it and the thumb. If I combine that with adjusting the pinky finger and angle of the forearm, I think it may do the trick…

Thanks to @Smeep for the suggestion on fixing the sketch. I’ve actually completely redrawn the left arm now into a slightly more comfortable pose.

Busy couple of days, finally made some more progress on the drawing and finished the lineart… for now…

…Just realised i need to move the wrinkles that were beneath the thumb in the original sketch.

there:

I’m hoping you guys are enjoying my progress, its defo getting way more attention than i expected. Hope everyone’s having a nice summer too.

So I wanted to fix the hatching technique compared to how I started, making it more consistent. Also, using my own arms as reference, this makes continuing a lot easier. I’ve now mapped out the shape and lighting on my arms and hands with directional strokes, shadows, and highlights:

The point which is lightest is really where I want the focal point to be. I’m hoping by it being the lightest, that’ll draw attention to it. Does it work? Any better ideas?

last update for today.

Nice work here! I am likewise very impressed with your anatomy understanding and terms. (The muscles stage was esp impressive! Nice basework for the sketch!)
I think you made good decisions on the left arm. It is definitely at a much more comfortable angle/pose.
The last post -the hatching stage- i presume is in mid progress? So far, it is looking great! I think the lighter value will definitely draw the viewer’s eye. I’m looking forward to how you finish rendering/hatching it out

Thank you! I only regret not really going back over the muscles for the redrawn arm. But yes, the hatching is mid progress. It’s quite time consuming so I’m taking it slow so that I don’t bore myself.

Very little progress today! Been busy with other things (made a killer curry for dinner).
I’ve semi-accurately marked out the moles and freckles of my reference (me) and done a little hatching test on the right arm to test some mid tones and the direction on veins.

In theory I’m halfway finished with the shading now (taking a longggg time).

I think this looks alright, hand is maybe a little too veiny and the index finger of the “completed” hand is maybe a little short. But, I think the variation in tone so far is okay.

Yooo! This is coming along great man! Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much! I think I’ll go back at some point and make the veins a bit fainter though.

Definitely some serious hatching going on. I think your patience is paying off with this one.

Hi all! Sorry I haven’t updated this in like a month! I moved and started a new job so I’ve been busyyyy.. today was actually the first time I’d properly revisited this piece…..

With one hand and one forearm FINISHED, I like to imagine this marks a halfway point for the lineart stage of this piece, which will be nice because it takes a longgggg time. Then I can focus on colour and what I’m gonna do with the sleeves (genuinely no idea yet..).
