Is there a hot key to lock the marquee and vector line tools to an angle? in photoshop you can hold shift and it locks to a 45º angle. Is there a way to do this?
Snapping to a grid and ‘locking’ a line to an angle are two different things.
If you press and hold Shift then the Line Tool will draw a line in locked increments of 15 degrees. This happens for single lines. polylines and polygons.
That doesn’t happen with Polygon selections. probably because the Shift key has a special use with selections.
However, you can convert a vector shape to a vector selection to get around that.
For grid snapping the snap is not strong and it only happens close to a grid line or intersection.
Also, the start of a line will not snap to the grid. The end of a line will snap, as will the subsequent nodes of a polyline or polygon.
The polygonal selection tool will also snap to the grid.
Even though the start point doesn’t snap, you can edit the vector shape or selection outline and when you grab-drag the nodes then they will snap to grid, so you can ‘correct’ the location of the start point.
Yea im talking about the polygonal selection tool, and the vector line too… neither of them seem to snap to any degree angle… even at 15… it freely floats…
im also on a mac, so idk if that makes any difference… but my shift keys dont seem to be initializing any of that prompt to do this…
I’m sorry but I had an almighty brain failure.
I confused snapping to grid with locking to discrete angle increments as I was exploring both behaviours ![]()
The Line Tool will be locked to 15 degree increments if the Shift key is pressed and held.
With a vector layer, the Shift key can be pressed before or after the line is started.
With a raster layer, the Shift key has to be pressed after the line is started.
It’s best to get in the habit of always pressing it after the line is started.
Does that work for you?
Polyline and polygon do not lock to angle increments.
If you hold the Shift key down while drawing polylines or polygons, they do not snap to grid.
It does answer my question. SO yes… Unfortunately I care more about this in regards to the selection tools… Suppose its a legitimate feature request… I would think this would be easy enough to implement, but i also am not a programmer so… hopefully im not offending any programmers lol
I often have thoughts like that and I may be right but there are few developers and so much for them to do. However, if you don’t ask then you don’t get.
You could create a Feature Request for this.
There is a complication in that a pre-click Shift with selection tools cause the action to switch to Add.
So it would need to be a post-click Shift for angle locking. This is what happens with raster lines as I mentioned before. I don’t know why it’s like that with raster lines but not with vector lines which can use pre or post-click.
For a feature request, you’d need to describe the problem you have with current behaviour and what you’d like to see for changed behaviour and how it would benefit you and anyone else.
