Looking for someone who can give me a hand to learn how to paint.
Im looking for both how to pick colors and brush control (im trying to tackle the subject but im totally lost) since i want to try to detach myself for the soft shading kind of style. Dm me if interested.
Here i few examples of what i want to achieve (or artist of reference)
Not to try to dissuade you from finding a mentor, but you can get pretty far just by watching a lot of online tutorials.
The other thing I would suggest is to check if there’s real-life painting courses in your area.
In my experience the best way to learn digital painting is by first doing some painting with actual colours and brushes.
Regarding online tutorials, I can highly recommend these here:
The guy is amazing, and his approach to learning to paint is both easy, doable and powerful.
I’ve learned quite a few things from his videos.
I just skimmed through the video posted by Papernoise, and it confirms what I and others believe about Still Life painting. As of now I’m not into painting just yet, but I already have a plan on how I will approach painting and it will be with Still Life. Anatomy and other things are what I do with drawing/sketching. The rationale is that if you can paint still life then you can paint anything. Still life just make things much more simpler for you to study and focus, and the same knowledge and skill you acquired through still life studies can and will apply to other subjects you’ll paint later on. The same way we learn anything in life, we start small and simple and still life is perfect for that, check out the video posted above for proof of that coming from an experienced painter.
If you have a phone I’m sure you can take pictures with it, or if you want something more professional, you can download still life here: Garreth Paul (@garrethpb) | Unsplash Photo Community also, look for “still life” on there. Make a collection of it. Your focus is on color and value studies, not textures and compositions, not even anatomy or proportion.
There’s a well known saying that goes something like this: Value does the work, but Color gets the credit. No matter how good your color is, it will not look good and right if your Values are wrong. BUT, if you get your Color wrong and Value right, the painting is still good! This is why people start out in black and white because it allows them to just focus on Value since Value is King. When you look at any painting, you intuitively know that it’s good and right, even though you can’t explain why. Well guess what? It’s the VALUES. When looking for still life photo references, pay attention to values. Strong shadow are easy to start with, then gradually move toward soft shadow.
