Misaka Mikoto study (Railgun T)

Hi, sorry for reposting! This is one of my oldest artworks, but I shared it in a thread that doesn’t get included in the portfolio page. It’s a more polished one, so I wanted to have it on record :slight_smile:

This is a copy study of Mikoto Misaka from A Certain Scientific Railgun T. I drew this when I was binge watching the whole Toaru series :smile: Mikoto is a girl with super powers and her signature move is propelling a metal coin to supersonic speed. How cool is that! Hence her nickname, Railgun.

I drew this in December 2021, 8 hours as registered by Krita.

And here’s the reference image, a still from the anime:

PS. I have something new cooking, but it’s still far from finished. Maybe one more week? We’ll see! :thinking:

Congratulations, @YRH, this is now featured in the gallery.

May I have your permission to post it in Krita-Artists’ Mastodon account? If yes, I will credit your user name (or another name that you specify). If no, no problem. Please @ me in your reply.

@sooz hehe, it’s a little unexpected, but I’ll take it :sweat_smile:

I’m not sure what should be the bar for sharing it more widely. It’s a straight up copy, which makes me a bit uneasy. But if it’s OK based on your past experience, then please feel free to share. My user name is OK, it’s what I use for art related stuff.

I think it’s ok. You were very good to mark it as a study, or fanart, of Misaka Mikoto and I’ll be sure to carry over that text on Mastodon. There’s a lot of fanart from this artist online.

EDIT:
It’s posted now. You can see it here:

Where are you from?
Looks like I’m an East Asian.

Hello @liu! If you’re asking about me, I’m a Polish native. However, I love anime and manga art and this is my preferred painting style!

Unfortunately, I only know English and I cannot speak Chinese or Japanese, which really is a shame.

I hope we can still communicate thanks to the technology and have fun here on Krita forums! :slight_smile:

Oh, Yeah? Are these cartoons translated into Polish? Like you westerners like this comic style is rare

just perfect! :heart_eyes:

Your drawing is really good! I see that you really know how to balance colour:
As in, personally, I feel the colour theory you’ve used here is actually better than in refference itself.

If it still helps I want to add these critiques:

  • The anatomy iself isn’t so congruouse, I really think this is the piece’s biggest downside;
    This situation might occur by just simply trying to be as faithful to the drawing as possible, by copying what you see from it and not the anatomy proportion themself - in the future, try approaching it as just a random drawing you make, and then takethe anatomy tidbits of the refference from the most to least noticeable, the anatomy parts will tie themself better that way! ^^
  • And second, the eyes, you could’ve added some soft brush-strokes to them, as you did for the blush (and as in the refference, if I am not mistaking)
    I would advice you to really try experimenting with soft brushes in general and see if you like them - they can REALLY help your drawing a lot if you know how to use them and they can be pretty fun.

And that’s kinda it, hope I’ve helped in any way and that you have a G’day!

I’m happy that you liked it and thank you for the feedback! There’s always something to improve either due to the lack of ability or laziness / cutting corners :sweat_smile: I definitely want to try new things in future paintings.

Chronologically, this is my oldest work. I think my new ones are a bit better, although I’m not always super consistent yet. Sometimes one aspect is better while another falls short.
