I feared, the ring design would become the thin inner outer circle of the initial post, which would have been a regression for me. But Carsten Hartenfels found a clever solution.
Technical note:
On my system (Windows 10 with Huion tablet attached) I have to minimize → maximize the Krita window after each change of the settings, otherwise the picker, triggered by the pen button, won’t work anymore.
The additional half-circles on the sides are actually both my idea and my implementation, you can see on the commits list. The settings were also implemented by me.
The technical side was implemented by him though, and he’s taking the control back for some more tweaks possibly to reenable the preview on hover (as @Lynx3d requested), so I’ll let him know. Also Carsten goes by @Drawpile here (since he also develops Drawpile).
I’d suspect that this is related to the settings dialog, not the setting. Try the following (starting from the state where it works):
Open the settings dialog. Don’t change anything, just press OK. Try to use the color picker with your pen button. How does it behave?
Switch to the color picker tool (e.g. by pressing P). In the Tool Options docker, change the Preview option to something else. Switch back to the brush tool (e.g. by pressing B). Try to use the color picker with your pen button again, how does it behave?
Sorry, then many thanks to you @tiar and to @Drawpile. The design and the customizability are making this picker stand out. I think this is the best picker I have seen so far.
it stops working, without changing a setting in Krita’s settings
picking with pen keeps working, when changing a setting in the Tool Options
One more:
Brush tool active → changing a setting within Krita’s settings - closing settings → brush still active → picker stops working → switching to another tool → switching back to brush → picker is working again
Okay, yeah, then it’s probably not related to the new setting. If you want to look into it further, you could check if it’s due to the Huion driver by uninstalling that and using OpenTabletDriver instead (check supported tablets and whether you need the Windows Ink plugin): https://opentabletdriver.net/
