I actually used a combination of selection tools including lasso. Especially for the buildings, I used polygon selection tool a lot. ![]()

Hmmm… I really don’t understand how this site handles compression. How comes that you have been able to upload a 3000x2500 and 1.38 MB image, while when I uploaded an image last month that was already smaller in all aspects, 2480x2380 and around 850 KB, it was still reduced to 1920x1843 and 98 KB…? (Most images are reduced to 1920xSomething).
Not complaining that my images are reduced here but that the rules don’t seem to apply to everyone the same. Is it a question of status or something?
The forum software has certain parameters for resizing that includes resolution and not the size. Then there is an upload limit which is both size and as well as dimension.
I need to check how it determines what to resize. I think it tries to resize everything but if something is already within the range it doesn’t resize it but optimises and compresses it. Also it doesn’t discard the original image, if you open the image in the popup it will show a link to original image at the bottom.
Thanks. That link to the original image is easy to miss, dark blue on black background… ![]()
Here’s my first entry: City Scape with a strange perspective, using just one ink brush.
For the optional challenge using the lasso tool I’ll have to learn more about it.
It’s like a teeny tiny Toronto. I like the way it kind of explodes from one point.
Surprise! Not the piece I started in the WIP thread. I might post that later.
With this piece I wanted to create something new rather than draw primarily using a single reference. I think it is an important skill I want to develop more.
@MangooSalade I like how well you did the car. Really stands out nicely! ![]()
Hurry, call Godzilla! That bumpy building is actually a chrysalis and a giant insect will come out to destroy the city! ![]()
(You know it’s a nice job when you can have multiple interpretations of the title! LOL)
No need for Godzilla! The guy in sportswear might seem like a simple guy, street dancing in exchange of some pocket money in the middle of the city, but he’s actually a monster hunter in disguise, watching over the country. He travels in his old orange car, that his mom/dad drove when he was a kid, until they tragically died, killed by a monster.
Thanks so much! Bright orange helps.
It’s a great idea for another picture! Tracky Dacks, Monster Hunter uniform.
I have gone back in time for this picture. I have done a whole iron age farm settlement. I am calling this historical fiction because I haven’t stayed particularly true to the archaeological evidence. But these people did insane levels of decoration on stone and metal so I imagined they might be a bit flashy in other areas. It’s also a little influenced by the artist Eric Ravilious who did some paintings of hill figures during the Second World War.
Anyway, I have painted a collection of round houses and a small granary. It’s almost entirely from my imagination and 30 something years of reading history and archaeology books. I did have to remind myself of what rare breed pigs and cattle looked like a few times but didn’t take any references from any particular picture. I used the lasso extensively which is why it looks a bit like a collage. I quite like that effect. I also really like the cow.
Wow, this is a wonderful picture, AND in my opinion, the idea behind it is GREAT!
After all, we with our modern cities are not the origin of human urbanization, that began thousands of years ago and not just with the invention of reinforced concrete and the use of its possibilities.
Thank you so much for this!
Michelist
@Staticgirl I agree with Michelist! Very well done and great use of the lasso tool.
I was short on time due to school, but I made it. I was really inspired by the city of Belgrade and its diverse architecture.
There’s a real feeling of night-time quietness in the coolness of the colours and the lack of people. I almost feel there is a fox digging through someone’s rubbish out of shot… It is a place for night creatures.
