Monthly Art Challenge – January 2024 – Icy Isolation

Hello Krita Artists!

We completed the Monthly Art Challenge for December 2023. Congratulations to @YRH, the winner. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted for the entries.

And now It’s time to announce the Monthly Art Challenge for January 2024.

Monthly Art Challenge – January 2024 – Topic: Icy Isolation

Details from @YRH:

In December 2022 we were sheltering from cold, this time we will tremble in fear!

  • Topic: Icy Isolation
  • keywords / mood: snow, ice, numbing cold, isolation, silence, dread, eeriness
  • Feel free to depict what works for you the best. A landscape? Still life? Or maybe even a character scene? As long as it evokes the mood and makes you feel cold and uneasy! :persevere:
  • For example, my inspirations for this sort of topic are the movies The Shining (1980), The Thing (1982), and the video game Blood (1997).

I hope this will be an interesting change of pace (and that such a theme is still acceptable…). Thanks!

Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress.

Rules

  • The composition should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else. If you are using a reference photo taken by anyone other than yourself, please ensure the license allows for its use and include a credit to the photographer with your submission.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. If possible, please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread. Please ensure all entries are in the same post.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course, the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • Submissions will be accepted until 2024-01-27T17:00:00Z, at which time the topic will automatically close. You can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end of the challenge period. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner(s) will be featured on this website in the featured artwork row.
  • The winner(s) will have the privilege to set the topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable, then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge.

Please spread the word about this art challenge by posting your artwork on various social media websites with the hashtag – #KritaChallenge. If possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

**P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. To submit feedback, please create a new topic in the Site Feedback category.

Note : We have changed the title of this event from Monthly Art Contest to Monthly Art Challenge as it is more of a challenge for learning together rather than a contest, even if there is an award.

Hi !! I am new to this platform and this is my first piece I am putting in a contest. This piece is called the “Cold Hallway”. This drawing interprets an eerie frosty monster with no name. This monster is following you down a dark strange hallway making you feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed of what things might he do to you. In the drawing you can see that he is slowly melting away do to him not being in his regular icy environment. He died by getting impaled by a huge icicle, and when he came back he was sent to this strange place left to rot and meltaway.

This second piece is about an 18 year old girl that is being tormented by an evil ice demon causing her isolation from her family and her regular life. This demon takes over her body making her into an ice monster, and now she is trapped in this dreadful icy wasteland.

I’m early with my first submission for this month.

In case anyone is wondering what this represents, it is a preserved single fly isolated in an ice cube.

I used a pencil, a shader and texture splats for this one. The background fill layer is standard paper pattern.

Edit 1:

The second entry is called: “Scream under the ice of a frozen lake”.

It was done with a sketch pencil of the default Krita 3 brushes for the cracks and a shader pencil for the face.

Edit 2:

Third entry is “The (stickman) Thinker in Icy Isolation”.

Used a memileo photo brush and a pencil brush.

Your 2nd submission is great, too.

I moved it into the same post as your first one as all your entries need to be together in one post.

My entry for “Icy Isolation”. I had a vast, frozen, remote arctic landscape in mind, then ended up adding the remains of an elk to add a little eerieness as suggested in the prompt. I was cold the whole time I painted it Lol.

My second entry for “Icy Isolation”

My 3rd entry for “Icy Isolation”, referenced from a National Geographic photo. I’m enjoying this topic, and learning a few things at the same time.

Hello all,
This is my first time posting to the forum. I’ve been using Krita for a few years. This was inspired by the freezing Antarctic control rooms in old movies – the suspenseful kind where a breach, an alien intrusion, or a rival spy causes the heating system to fail, leaving the scientists to fend for themselves while they wait to be rescued. I mostly used glaze brush, with some airbrush.

Nothing like a dark snowy pine forest in winter. And you added the aura of a wolf overhead for eeriness! I like the bright blue added around the campfire stones. All the elements kept my eyes rotating about the scene. Nicely done!

Cool! This scene reminds me of Ripley in the movie Aliens. Definitely looks very cold and creepy.
