Monthly Art Challenge – October 2025 – The Burden of Power

Hello Krita Artists :waving_hand:

It’s time for a new art challenge!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the September challenge by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who took the time to vote.

@Marius_Galaj won the most votes and has created the theme for this month’s challenge.

Monthly Art Challenge - October 2025 - The Burden of Power

Imagine having absolute power over every government, institution, and company in the world to get into character. You decide to teach humanity that with power comes responsibility. To send a clear message to every subject/voter, that those who are set above them to create and execute the laws, feel the daily burden of that power. Thus, you are issuing a special decree regarding the visible burden of power.

This October, your task will be to draw/paint an object that will pose a physical or mental burden to any position of authority you choose: parliamentarians, senators, judges, directors, bishops, or anything else you can think of as position of power.

Ideally, your inventions shouldn’t float in the air, but should be on a pillow/pedestal or hang on a coat rack (e.g., as if a newly elected senators were to enter their new office and first thing to see is the special uniform they’ll have to wear for their entire term).

  • Remember that all people in a given category will be required to wear this object (regardless of, for example, political affiliation; right or left). It is intended to clearly distinguish those in power from ordinary people. They must wear it at all times during their work. If you elect parliamentarians, it will apply equally to those you like and those you dislike. So don’t take it too far even if you know that some deserve very heavy burden. It is not meant to be a punishment for those who are in power now, but a warning for those who can be in the future.

  • The physical burden can be a special chain, so uncomfortable that it’s hard to forget, yet so light that no one can avoid it due to poor health or old age. It can be uncomfortable because of its weight or the need to move in a certain way (e.g., a metal helmet, a tiara, a heavy cloak, broad shoulderpads, large shoes).

  • A psychological burden is something you don’t particularly feel physically, but which no normal person would voluntarily wear on a daily basis (e.g., a hat with bells, a large plume, or a funny mask).

  • You may be familiar with the fairy tale of the Princess and the Pea. She was so delicate that, despite sleeping on many mattresses, she would wake up in a very bad mood because of a single pea under them. Imagine someone with an ego as sensitive as the princess’s body; a vain, stingy, greedy, and proud person would be incredibly offended by your decree and might even refrain from seeking power because of your demands. However, a humble, polite, warm-hearted person with a somewhat playful attitude would accept this burden without protest, and even with a sense of humor. That’s the point; it won’t deter every bad person, but at least it will deter the worst ones; the self-absorbed ones, who are deadly serious about their own importance.

All artistic styles are allowed. You’ll have to use your imagination a bit, but you can always draw or paint from reference and just spice things up (Moderator note: Bear in mind the rule requiring an original composition).

Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress (WIPs).

I finally managed to enter a fully rendered drawing! I hope it will do the theme justice, and that I haven’t bent the rules too much. Being a woman in power can be an incredibly big social burden. It comes with expectations of being presentable and beautiful at all times, judgement, and yet no real respect.

Update: I revised my entry to hopefully make its meaning more clear. Let me know if it’s easier to understand!

Here is my concept of what I think is a very considerable Burden of Power. All politicians, including anyone running for any elected public office or service, must be fitted with the Truth Trainer the moment they start campaigning. They must wear the device all through their campaign and, if elected, must continue to wear it until the end of their term. The only time it can be removed is by permission of THE PEOPLE, who hold the keys. There are very few reasons the device may be removed while serving THE PEOPLE. A few examples would be death, hospitalization, or resigning from office. :flexed_biceps:

I’m sorry, but I’m having a hard time figuring out what this is. At first I thought “watch,” but now I’m not sure (suspenders?), nor am I sure how big and heavy it is.

I really like this fist, but I’m not sure where it’s supposed to go — should it hurt a little when activated, or is it making a loud squeal so everyone knows someone’s lying.

Anyway, great job, great concept!

As I understand it, there’s a collar, then strips that go down the back, between the legs and then up the torso and you attach the white box to the lock with the fist next to your face? :upside_down_face:

It looks like a lie generates a switft punch to the liar.

My submission for the contest. Should I send the .krz file?

Name:

“Power is low. Charge”

The illusion of power is causing us to lose it. The overload of information makes us believe we have power and gain knowledge, but instead, we are lonely, we are losing the ability to communicate, and when humanity is not united and caring for each other and the world, destruction and evil prevail.

Love it!

@Mariusz_Galaj I guess I just assumed everyone would know it was a lie detector that strapped and locked onto a politician. When he/she tells a lie, the needle trips the lever that releases the spring-loaded fist right to the face of the wearer. The “Burden” is having to make certain they tell the truth at all times or suffer a black eye when they tell a lie.
I’ll add a figure wearing one to illustrate it more clearly.

@Corentin Yes! The top band is locked around the neck. When the wearer (politician) tells a lie, the detector flips the lever that releases the spring-loaded fist to the face of the wearer. Lol

I guess it’s also time for me to post my entry! This one was inspired to me by a French song by Gérard Lenorman, Si j’étais Président (If I were President), where he says he would appoint Mickey (Mouse) as his Prime Minister. This made me think “what if it was real? How could he do that?” Well, with the mascot costumes they use in Disneyland! I heard that those are a real burden to wear, especially by hot weather! :joy:

At first I wanted to make only Mickey’s ears on a headband, but then I thought a full costume would be a more timeless sight, especially nowadays that France is burning through Prime Ministers at an alarming rate, and also more of a burden to remind them constantly to let their ego aside, to better fuse with the noble spirit of the character. Anyway, in the end I didn’t really invent anything here, simply connected some dots, but I felt like it was funny enough to deserve an illustration.

If I were you, I’d think to myself, “Didn’t I overdo it a bit?” I want you to know: you didn’t overdo it, you understood the topic well, and you did a great job!

As far as I know, the version of Mickey Mouse from “Steamboat Willie” is in the public domain, but the newer version is still protected, so we’ll have to wait a while before your idea becomes fully feasible.

Thanks @Mariusz_Galaj, I’m glad to have your endorsement! To be honest I didn’t even consider the feasability in terms of copyright when I did it!

@Elixiah I love the new version! It’s clearer and better! :joy: :+1:

The first artwork is the main one, and the idea is that officials are required to wear a top hat, which symbolizes all the bad decisions made regarding ordinary people. All decisions that have had a negative impact on people’s lives put psychological pressure on the official and create chaos in his head. The hat itself is unremarkable and does not stand out from his work clothes. But it really drives its wearer crazy, who, by abusing his power, has harmed ordinary people. I hope I managed to convey this in the art.

The second art is something like the crown of justice, a headdress, which must always maintain balance when making decisions. It can be worn by judges or people of higher rank. If a decision is made unfairly, the bowl will tilt to one side and press down on the shoulders, causing great discomfort to the wearer. The item is mythical, and its weight is very light thanks to a certain magic, and will remain so as long as the wearer is steadfast in truth, honesty, and justice. If these principles are violated for personal gain or the gain of another in any way, the bowl and headdress become heavy.

Woah! These are really neat ideas! I really like the top hat one though, pretty cool how to any onlooker the wearer just looks normal when in reality they are dealing with the weight of their actions

Hello Sofia,

I believe your comments regarding the current state of society are spot on. I agree. The only way to save ourselves is indeed to unite for the common good of all of us.

An excellent political cartoon. Perhaps submit it to the papers for publishing?
