Monthly Art Challenge – September 2023 – Glow in the Dark

Hello Krita Artists!

We completed the Monthly Art Challenge for August 2023. Congratulations to the winners, @Scio and @Elixiah, who tied for first place. And congratulations to everyone who participated by submitting wonderful art, and also to our members who voted for the entries.

And now It’s time to announce the Monthly Art Challenge for September 2023. @Scio has picked a good one!

Monthly Art Challenge – September 2023 – Topic: Glow in the Dark

Further detail: Like glowing jellyfish or neon cityscapes or magic spells, or a bonfire… Anything glowy.

Rules

  • The concept and idea for the artwork should be your own and not an exact copy from someone or somewhere else.
  • Artwork should be done in Krita. Submissions must be done from scratch in Krita, no paint-over or tracing allowed. Photobashing is allowed only when explicitly specified in the topic.
  • The topic changes every month. Your submission should be somehow related to the topic. If possible, please add a few lines explaining your idea and image.
  • No AI-generated images are allowed, not even partial use of AI and paint over. It is unfair for those who are drawing from scratch.
  • You can post a maximum of 3 entries and also edit the entries until the deadline. All your entries will be clubbed during the vote and you only get one vote. Reply with your entries to this post in this thread.
  • In order to have the image featured, the entries need to be safe for work so please avoid any NSFW or controversial content. The moderators can use their discretion to disqualify the image from the contest with prior notice. Of course, the artist will be given the chance to submit an alternate image or change it.
  • Submissions will be accepted until 2023-09-28T01:00:00Z, at which time the topic will automatically close. You can check how much time is left at the bottom of the thread.

We will hold a poll at the end of the challenge period. The artwork with the most votes will be the winner.

Prize

  • The winner(s) will be featured on this website in the featured artwork row.
  • The winner(s) will have the privilege to set the topic of their liking. If the winner is not available or reachable, then the 1st runner up will be asked to provide the topic and challenge
  • The winner will also be awarded the Monthly Art Contest Winner badge.

Please spread the word about this art challenge by posting your artwork on various social media websites with the hashtag – #KritaChallenge. If possible, include a link to the forum post.

I hope we will enjoy this exercise so let us begin.

**P.S. Note we can change the rules based on the feedback on this contest and modify the format. Any suggestions are welcome. To submit feedback, please create a new topic in the Site Feedback category. Please post only artworks and discussion related to submitted artwork in this thread. There is a WIP thread for each monthly art challenge in which you can ask questions and post your works in progress.

Note : We have changed the title of this event from Monthly Art Contest to Monthly Art Challenge as it is more of a challenge for learning together rather than a contest, even if there is an award.

Hello!
Here is my art! I went for a relaxed kind of indie moment but with fairy/glowworm kind of bugs playing with the hair. I tried that Krita water stamp brush for the first time which helped me a lot to do the water as I have tried previously but failed.

Side note: does anyone know if there is a page in this website for art advice or advice for starting to commission art? (I know my art isn’t good enough to sell currently but I am planning to once I get much better)

Here is my participation illustration.
I wanted to experiment with a new brush (never used) throughout the illustration, in order to understand its transfer into the drawing.
Only for the fireflies, the mist and the clouds I used a soft brush.
I also wanted to use the same brush used for the entire illustration for these elements, but they didn’t convey the idea of softness I wanted.

@100100 You’ve done some very nice lighting there :+1:
(I’ve no idea if it’s realistic but it looks good.)

Thank you very much! I’ve never studied art or drawing so I couldn’t tell you if it’s realistic or not. if the shadows and lights are good it’s only thanks to a a girl who studied photography and gave me all the instructions on how to do them! I have to thank her!

Since I have not seen any of these oil lamps shining underwater, and that is somehow also excluded, it is definitely unrealistic. And the fuels that allowed this would destroy the lamp.
And that, although it is so beautifully depicted. Idea and implementation I find definitely great!
Good job @100100!

Thank you very much! The idea came to me from the fish with the lantern that live in the depths and I adapted it as if it were “the donkey and the carrot” to encourage him to move forward. I think Ahab meant if the lights and shadows were realistic in his message.

I think so too, maybe I should have left out some of those emoji’s   to make it clearer that it was meant with a wink.

Cat’s eyes glowing in the dark.

As a reference, I used a photograph of my, unfortunately deceased, cat sitting in front of a net to prevent him from falling onto the street. Did some line drawings and used the fill tool. I used the glow effect for the glowing eyes.

heyo, this is my submission!
the idea for the art was starlight in a bottle - I tried to make the stars the brighest part since they’re the central part of the image but I also tried to make the signature and bottle glow a bit

This was the second work I did using Krita. Being very new, this is my first challenge. I wanted to play and experiment with lighting tools. I was still not very familiar with how to use Krita…LOL
