Oh, and I looked at James Gurney’s gamut site and watched the video in part three. I kinda got what he was talking about, but most of that is way over the head of a guy who didn’t take an art class after 7th grade. 
I was debating with myself whether or not to even mention gamut masking because it could just as easily be more confusing than helpful! It really helped me because I’ve always struggled with color. It seems so counterintuitive, but intentionally limiting myself to a particular region of a color wheel (I used the YRMBY color wheel, below) actually made choosing colors easier for me than it usually is–it enabled me to concentrate more on lights and darks and color intensity (both of which I think you should be able to use however you want.) Sorry for the confusion!
Hiya, glad you are wanting to get into the challenge! As background info, I have recently transitioned from doing just Pixel Art to Digital Art/painting, so I thought I would challenge the artists here with one of the elements that make Pixel Art what it is, and that is a limit on colours.
My intention was that you can take this as far as you like, either only using colours from the 8 colour palette, or using them as base colours so that your image ends up with the tones of the palette (not sure if I used the correct art term there!).
In my mind I am imagining a painter starting with a squirt of each of the eight paints on their mixing board.
As far as the gamut mask goes, Krita will allow you to put the mask over your colour wheel, and you can set it to just guide your choices, or actually force you to pick colours only within the mask. I will try to find the thread where this was discussed a little while ago.

In a nut shell, you would limit the palette because you know the target media can only reproduce a certain gamut of colors on the wheel.
The gamut of an OLed 4k can display will not be the same as the Las Vegas Sphere. But there is a common zone between the two and you want to make sure these are the colors on your pallette.
In the end its still analog that rules.
Learned this when designing your custom dvd menus was a thing.
Would this technique disqualify? Not a real animal just a test.
I used a Halftone Filter then a Color Index limited to 8 colors using the NYX8 pallette by Javier Guerrero. with the ‘complementary’ color gamut mask set to 169deg.
I think it’s fine, I’m happy if it gets people doing interesting art, and learning techniques and tools.
For anyone who wants to use a limited color palette from lospec.com. I downloaded the top 20 most downloaded palettes an turned them into a bundle. You can download it here.
All credit goes to the original artists. I only combined them for convenience sake.

Cool. Thanks for pointing out some tools in Krita I haven’t used before use. For my first act I’m trying out the color gamut masks on the color wheel, Fuzzy Spelunkers:

Oh. So “Limited Palette” does not mean Limted Color Count. So mixing is allowed, as well as.all the shades and tints of thise colors. Correct?
Gamut masks and limited palettes are something I need to learn more about too.
I learn better through visual representation. If anyone can show a few clear examples of what’s required. That would be helpful. Thanks.

Happy for you to take it as far as you like. You could do like Pixel Art and only use the 8 colours in the palette, or capture the vibe of the colour palette by using mainly those colours and dertivatives of them.
As far as the Gamut Mask, I was imagining what @steve.improvthis has done above:
can i use my own pallete? i have 10 colors but i can’t find it in lospec, i am so excited for this challenge, and might join in the fun for the first time 
The limited palette is not strictly needed, it’s an extra challenge
Also, the conditions state that the extra challenge is to use a limited palette.
How you limit the palette is not specified, but some helpful suggestions are given in the main challenge topic:
