I thought I should clarify this a bit, since it’s common practice to use real animals as inspiration for creature design.

The difference here is we’re making up a creature using disparate parts; Almost like they’d been stitched together Frankenstein-fashion. So the various parts should still be recognisable from their sources.

I’ve done a crude sketch to demonstrate - sticking a cheetah’s head on a gazelle’s body, with a scorpion’s tail:

So it’s not a coherent design, but looks a bit surreal - In a similar fashion to the original Greek myth.

Can you make it look cool and convincing in spite of the absurdity?!

Or maybe just embrace it and make it more comical?

Whatever you do, I hope you have fun with it! :nerd_face: :+1:

I think it’s a pretty fun subject.

I call this a ‘vulzirrel’; vulture, lizard, squirrel, three animals I happened to see the other day, using photos I took as reference.

I look forward to spending all month not remembering to complete this, heh.

That’s funny - I was thinking about doing one with a squirrel last night; Just imagining a mashup of some regular garden visitors!

It’s looking good so far. Maybe it’s worth making the squirrel legs bigger so they’re more in proportion? Perhaps trying a variation with more of a vulture neck? :thinking:

You could try doing some silhouettes to test variations without worrying about details. Or use transform tools on a copy to chop/move/scale parts.

I’m sure this will be good - so keep going! :slightly_smiling_face: :+1:

Can it be insects, or arachnids? Or are we talking just animals? I read creature so I’m needing a little clarity. Thanks.

Yes - it can be anything; That’s why I put creature instead of animal.

It does actually say insect in the long description (in the click to expand section):

Ah missed it. Thanks.

My wips;

My WIP of monthly art challenge for June 23. an undead rat, bat, and snake style chimera. It should be noted that Stephen Gammell is a clear influence on this project. Everthing is being drawn with the basic brush set, air brush, and blending tool. this may also be my final submission for this month because i kind of like it.
