Monthly Art Challenge – May 2025 – Humongous Hats!

If Patrick Nagel had liked Humongous Hats… and Polka Dots! :slight_smile:
I hope he didn’t just roll over in his grave!

As happy as I am with how this turned out, I’m not submitting this. @sooz and I agree, it’s too close to the “real” thing, Patrick Nagel’s “Bold”.

When comming back on it this morning I forgot witch plant/fruit was at the end of the first sketch and it looked a bit to much like a fairy. So I choose to go for a fruit and fairy hat (sort of).

Watercolors… started out with me trying to do some aquarelle splashes and ended up here.
Update: Trying other blend/brush options… not sure what captures the feeling of a lazy beach day best yet.

With a bit more blending

More Splashy

More WC Panterly

After looking at this for a few weeks, I decided to purple in the area next to the hat and call it done.

Here’s another I started… It’s going to be more of a round brush painting this time…
The hat is rather set, we’ll see what I end up doing with the sand and the water. :slight_smile:

Turns out I liked the water better on the bottom. Looks like it’s a beautiful day at the beach… might as well bring the hat!

This was done almost entirely with the fab @Rakurri brushes: Circleblnd, Circlepaint, Circlebrush, and Avtrykk Softer. I might do some more with the sand… not sure yet.

Edit: Arms now included! :slight_smile:

Edit: I mean, what’s a beach day without the proper accessory!

@YunanimousArts If you’re just looking for a brush to add in space type stuff, the iForce73’s “Universe Environments". @Michelist has a post where you can download them: iForce73 - Environments 2.0 - Michelist Re-Pack

If you’d like to create something more like this, James Julier has a cool iPad tutorial that I found helpful, even using Krita:

Sketch of my idea.
“Those summer hats are getting more ridiculous each year”.

Thanks @steve.improvthis from the video. It’s very helpful. I’ve been making attempts at emulating the same effect the instructor has in the video.

My current progress;

my 3D render/base paint of the scene;

NGL, the emphasis is too much on the interior design that I might skip submitting this altogether. I have been seeing this scene in my head for about six months now. I thought it was time to finally paint it. I put in a hat in the scene so I can combine both projects… but the hat is so tiny in the scene I don’t even think it would qualify as fulfilling the prompt.

Either way, this is my main project for this month. If I finish this early, then I might do another quick one that focuses on the prompt.

I scribbled this today. Going for something funny this time…

Thought I’d do a little comedy as well… using a photo of myself as reference and adding whatever else comes to mind. @Corentin :laughing:

I’m not really sure about this. At least it has a hat…not really my style, but I just thought of the concept.
I name it “Can Death Be Holy?” maybe doing another one
