That’s the one, thanks!
thanks : )
it’s also a useful warm-up area !
@lehko i’m really loving your entry. i love the dappled lighting on the character (it’s probably my favorite part), but shouldn’t the ground/part of the ground have dappled lighting as well?
PS, wish your canvas was bigger and/or your character isn’t so close to the edges. really good job btw

Thanks for pointing that out : )
I’ve staged my scene more or less like this:
So yes, some of the lighting splashes on the floor are missing. I’d thought of that, but I keep forgetting things along the way, so it’s noted now ![]()

That’s a good point. As I’m initially working on relatively small formats, it’s possible that the main focal point is much larger than it should be.Before working on the final version, I’ll try a wider angle of view.
I’m conscious I made a case for having these WIP threads, but I rarely post anything in them myself… ![]()
I’ve got an idea for an autumnal scene with a reaper figure. I haven’t done much with it yet, just a few thumbs. Yesterday I had a more purposeful scribble session and did this:
I’m thinking of maybe a church ruin with old graves/tombs and fallen leaves. I’m not sure whether this composition works for the vibe I want - I’m thinking perhaps of something a little more intimate and confrontational, with a more ghost-like reaper. Maybe ditching the scythe. ![]()
I feel like I’m treading water a bit this month, trying to do too many things and not getting very far with any of them. Hopefully I’ll make it through with something satisfactory… ![]()
I noticed that too, but thought maybe you just had got around to it yet - I’m glad Edgar pointed it out. It’s looking great already, so if you can improve it further it should be a very strong piece. ![]()
i think it’s ok if you don’t post much on the WIP thread. the most important function of the WIP thread really is to keep the images clean in the finals thread. if we have WIPs and finals in one thread, it would be hard to figure out which one to vote for… some changes are big enough to tell which one is the finished version. but if the last edit was something simple as a color change, it would be hard to decipher which one is the final image… the one with the blue dress of the one with the gold dress?
I appreciate that, @edgarej. It takes me a long time to copy all the image links into the poll. It would be near impossible if WIPs were mixed in.
More scribbles!

This is getting closer to what I’m thinking. A dark apparition encountered among the ruins. Probably arches - or what’s left of them. I don’t know what the book is about but I quite like it.
I’m trying not to be unnecessarily fussy just because I have an audience. It’s scruffy, but enough for me to get a sense of where I’m going.
I do spend time visualising stuff in my head and my brain is often ten steps ahead of what’s on the canvas; I’m often surprised when I look back at an early stage and wonder ‘how did I see the potential in this mess’.
I could actually use this as the base for the piece, but I know I should probably make an effort to draw it properly if I want to save me a load of problems later. Must… resist… ![]()
I gave up on my original idea and decided on a rendering
of my cat Squanchy wearing his Halloween costume. The shirt says “too cute to spook” btw. ![]()
I like that its on a scooter and not a broom. Cute😁.
Depending on if you want cute or scary, could depend how you would want to maybe have something like cheese or a potion of cheese scent to lure the mice to the kitty and maybe have the mice and or worms be the bait for bird catching and maybe have a bird or a mouse in the bag or as a charm/necklace/belt to indicate prior victims or in a basket or a cage…I do not know if that’s too dark, I apologize if it is. Could have some catnip also depending what you like. I got so many ideas. I am rambling. Have fun I am excited to see where you go with this!!!
Or it could be a dog disguised as a cat dressed as a witch getting bait for the neighborhood cats to then turn on the neighborhood cats.
I love all your ideas, @EGStyles. Thanks!
Thank you !!! Welcome! Very interested on what you end up doing for this piece !!!
