Monthly Art Contest - October 2021 - Topic - "Sci-fi meets Fantasy" - 🗳 Voting has ended

amazing imagery here. I think you combined both. here we have an “alien” atleast to this world of dragons - or this earthlike place. The dragon alone create the fantasy feel.

My entry for this month’s contest. Came up with a idea of a team of planet investigators stumbling upon a wyvern/dragon’s cave while recovering their damaged surveyor robot.

I used the default RGBA brushes. I mostly used RGBA 02 Thick Paint, RGBA 05 Impasto-details, and RGBA 06 Rock. I also used layer filters and effects. I’m really happy with how the wyvern/dragon came out. It was a really fun challenge especially with the topic.

Nice, the wyvern looks great! You put the brushes to good use there.

Thanks, @anemone1231 ! I do have a few ideas that could flesh this idea out more. Maybe including sausages, which I think @Grum999 would appreciate.

Whoo!?
What?

Who’s talking about sausages!?

 :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

@raghukamath of course this joke is not an entry for the contest… I wasn’t strong enough to resist to do it

We have so many stunning entries whoaaa.

I also ended up going with “robots and dragons.” Is supposed to be based on St George and the Dragon and is inspired by the painting by Gustav Moreau here
Painted with RGBA Thick paint and RGBA Impasto. I found just using these two brushes only quite hard, but was a bit of fun.

An updated version of the one above. I didn’t like how the head was not very visible, and the glowing helmet fits better with the saints halo from the reference.

@Tycho One head I do like is that of the dragon. Nice scales!

I made some adjustments to my entry, mainly focused on values but I also made the beam run through the character in the front.
Inspired by @hulmanen I decided to share some of my progress here as well.
Pointers and critique welcome as always!

Hi I tried to join in the challenge, but turns out I was using the wrong brushes because I needed to reinstall the latest version.
Next time!

Fantastic work everyone, your paintings are beautiful!

Great idea, @Bleke. I’d love to see @SFFlanigan’s work.

This is what I ended up with:

At first I wanted to do some witch riding some futuristic vehicle instead of the old broomstick, but didn’t quite make it work, so I ended up with a mage/sorceress on some kind of hover bike. Just a normal day, on the way to defeat some evil creatures :stuck_out_tongue:

I mostly used “RGBA 02 Thickpaint” (saved with slightly tweaked pressure curves though) for the foreground and the moon. I like how it created this brushed metal effect, though for the most part the lightness effect went vanished with the excessive tweaking of details…

For the background/scenery I used a smudge brush, I don’t remember which preset I started with, but it now uses the same pattern as the RGBA 02 but in linear height mode (works better with smudging), and “wojtrib6-tip-squareStrongIMP” tip in lightness mode.

I also used the “wojtryb6 N 07 roll impasto pat” a bit for bushes and leaves.

Here is my October challenge submission (my 1st ever). I used RGBA brushes only. No blenders or fill tool. This scene combines sci-fi (robots and clone plants) with fantasy (gnomes and mushroom houses).

Scene
Having confirmed the promising findings of interplanetary soil sensors, a robot begins planting clone pods to replenish his lost crew.

My notes on RGBA brushes
I learned two key things from this challenge: 1) The RGBA rake makes gorgeous Van Gogh swirly marks - especially if you reduce opacity and flow. 2) Normally I use the Basic Blender in all my pieces so I had to find a way to shift colours using only RGBA brushes. I found that by setting the Colour Sampler to 33% and the mode to sample current layer, really nice gradations could be achieved quickly.

Not an entry
I hope this is okay to not put on a new thread, and I hope it doesn’t need NSFW filters?
Here is my painting where I thought I’d been using the right brushes, only to come back here, see everyone’s beautifully textured paintings, and then go
ohhhh whooops
And then a more final-er version where I gave up and went wild on the blur etc.
I will try the RGBA brushes on another painting, they do seem very fun.

2 minutes to spare!

It’s far from what I’d call finished, but it will have to do! I haven’t painted that furiously since… well… this time last year! :yum:

I hope it makes sense - my eyes and brain are too tired to tell…
